this is my least favorite quoted thing of all time. I've seen people even quote it incorrectly. It's so unoriginal and I have to wonder if people read lotr and thought this line was great, or if they're just quoting it cuz they saw someone else do it and thought it was just so profound

Amen to that. I'm always seeing it on bumper stickers, and lowering my estimation of the driver accordingly.

Doesn't that second option describe most quoting that's done on the internet? What's so different about this one?

Probably that it's not a standalone quote but a line from a poem. Basically that it's quoting without knowing the context, though it's obviously not an essential issue.
