different people have trouble hearing different things. there's no mystery here.

I beg to differ. The mystery lies in why OP would have trouble hearing that specific combination of syllables that they would otherwise have identified.

Does OP's local dialect differ wildly in the pronunciation of Moon Child? Were they unable to parse it because of the background track? Do they just not have the capacity to recognize that Moon Child could even be a viable name?

So many possibilities.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
not really

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's just, like, your opinion man.

DA

"Do they just not have the capacity to recognize that Moon Child could even be a viable name?"

I would guess this is it, phrased in a less pretentious way. It's not that they are for some reason incapable, it's that Moon Child is not a phrase most people parse as a name.

You have the capacity to recognize that Sghrkhjfhkf can, technically, be a name, but you're probably not going to naturally parse it that way.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh. ...I meant literally not possessing the linguistic prototype to recognize the combination of the two words as a viable person's name.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Then your word choice was bad, because it sounded like they could not, instead of could in theory but did not.

Someone who can't swim can't swim. Someone who does not have the capacity to swim will never be able to swim.

The amount of fucks I give right now is suboptimal for this conversation.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, sure. It just seems often that you come off pretentious when you aren't meaning to, and your word choice impacts that greatly.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
your word choice impacts that greatly

It affects it just enough that one subset of individuals will get mad if I fail to use academic language and another subset will get mad if I do.

Can't please everyone all the time, man.

I don't think "pretentious" is the word you're looking for but it's no mystery that herpymcderp is an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people just misunderstand things. You don't have to make assumptions about how OP is a slack-jawed yokel or an idiot. Human hearing is imperfect.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-17 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The only person making assumptions about OP being a "slack jawed yokel" is you, anon.

There is a dozen lines across the original Star Wars trilogy that I could never understand as child, but after a gap of several years not watching and then seeing them again in my late teens, I could understand.

"Moonchild" is the same - it was slightly incomprehensible to my ear as a child, but after I read the book (which got a massive movie tie-in release due to the crappy second movie), I knew what the name should be and could discern it.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-17 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really interesting.

Do you recall any of what those lines from Star Wars were? I'm just curious lol

Yeah, I made a comment over on the GC thread about that -
