I'm kind of annoyed that Kubo and the Two Strings hasn't received nearly the same level of flack that Dr. Strange and Gods of Egypt have over whitewashing its characters. I've seen people try to argue that Monkey and Beetle are non-human characters so yeah they can be any race but when the lead character is a human Japanese kid and has a white voice actor, that's straight up bullshit.

Should have made this a secret. :(

It's animation. Voice actors should ESPECIALLY not be chosen based on their skin color. It has literally no effect on the movie compared to....you know, their voice.

Kubo? That movie that pays so much loving attention to its roots in Japanese folklore and culture?

Oh, hey, thanks for reminding me to go see that while it's still playing somewhere.

DO IT! If you can, see it in a nice theater. I had the opportunity to see it in DolbyVision and Dolby Atmos (they stressed that during the opening, it's the only reason I remember it) and it was such a fantastic film.

I'm still 110% salty because from early promo stuff I thought Kubo was a girl and I was all hyped up and so freakin' excited and then... nope. It's a boy. And just, bah, I dunno, I was so much less into another action-adventure boy.

I headcanoned her as a girl all through the movie, no problem.

?!?!?!? I thought was a girl...

Nope, there was a preview that was something like "If I'm Beetle and she's Monkey why aren't you called Boy?" so I looked it up.

And I know I probably shouldn't let it bother me but I think I got all excited because it was an action-adventure movie that wasn't making a big deal about her being a girl in the previews (None of that stupid 'no-man' stuff from the Frozen trailers), just.. having her be the hero. And then oh, the reason it wasn't making a big obnoxious deal of her being a girl is... he's not a girl. That's why it gets to be a regular action-adventure movie.

I had a similar letdown with Song of the Sea because it was amazing and gorgeous and heartbreaking and the only two characters are a boy and his father, the women are just sad-lamps and plot points. She's a SELKIE! She has MAGIC! And she spends the entire movie doing nothing but tagging after her ordinary human brother as he saves the day for her.

I'm sorry anon 😔 I'm a little let down too. Probably still watch it because i like artsy shit but a bit bummed out about it.

B, that's kind of a bad example. like, the reason he's voicing the character is as a joke that plays off the fact that the character is white but Samuel L Jackson is not (a couple different jokes really). that's a real specific, distinct thing.
