I think what I've seen of it so far is good but it isn't living up to the hype for me. I'm going to wait for the hype to die down and then give it another try.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, I thought it would be better based on the hype. It was ok.

It's a bit of a slow build. It's just really fun.

Also, this secret is so dramatic.

Same problem here. My sister is the biggest hyper of it to me and I'm putting off watching it because a. she hyped Orange is the New Black (which I loved) but she also b. hyped Breaking Bad (which I hated).

Every time I pull up netflix lately I see Stranger Things and it starts niggling at me. I keep telling myself I'll get to it. (Meanwhile I watched the entirety of Touch while procrastinating.)

I'm waiting until the buzz dies down and ignoring anything related to it the best I can. After being sorely disappointed by a lot of things that were massively overhyped and overexposed, and proved to be horribly mediocre to me (Pacific Rim, Mad Max, TFA, and the Captain America movies), I'd like to go into something like this without any pre-existing judgements based on how annoyed I am at the fandom hype around it.

I enjoyed it a lot but I also didn't see that much hype for it in my corner of the internet so I wasn't expecting anything super amazing from it, I just had a lot of fun and binged through it fast because I liked it so much.

Hi, can I ask where our icon is from?
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Cap)

Sure! http://a-gal-icons.livejournal.com/

That is her icon account (though I think I credited the wrong account, lol, better fix that).

I think it's GOOD, but I think the hype is....not what it's about, I think? Rather, I don't think it's a super revolutionary story.

What I do thing is absolutely amazing is the character writing which plays with tropes and expectations and the subverts them - but not in a cheap flip-around way, but in a deeply human believable way.

The atmosphere is amazing if you let yourself get lost in it, and there's nostalgia for the beginning of supernatural series like the X-Files and old time horror.

I think hype can kill a thing, so don't go in with a set of expectations, just let yourself be carried b the story and the people, I'd say.

I wouldn't call it the greatest show of our generation.

I would call it a fresh concept that's consistent, surprising, and eminently watchable. I would also add that it has a pretty fucking rad treatment of its female cast and deliberately stomps all over the usual tropes.

Even though it's not my #1 favourite show on TV right now, it's good enough to make my top 5 of all time.

I think Stranger Things is really good not in a "mindblowing" sort of way, but in a really solid sort of way. It's a well-made show that treats its cast well, the story is well built, and it's got a fun conclusion. I think for me that's why I was so excited about it - because it's just all-around good, even if it didn't throw me into paroxysms of joy. It's the kind of thing I'd rewatch, too.

I thought it was technically brilliant, but it didn't scratch my particular itches.

TBH I'm not sure what they hype was about, mostly I just saw gifsets and liked them.

But it's pretty enjoyable as a mildly unsettling mystery type show. The characters are pretty well rounded for only 8 episodes...well, most of them.

I cried only a couple of times though, so could have cried more. Give it a 6.5 out of 10. Would probably watch the sequel in one go when it is out.

Absolutely LOVED its take on families. Loved that, would love to see more of it.

Are you a child of the 70s or 80s? Do you like 80s nostalgia? Did you like the X-Files? If the answer to at least 2 of these things is yes, then you'll enjoy Stranger Things.

I viewed the hype as being about the 80s nostalgia, which I love, and it's the main reason I enjoyed the show.

It's very enjoyable and yes, the cast/characters are really very cool, and are written very well. I was surprised at some of the crap they *avoided*, and did right, so that was also great. Not sure what particular 'hype' you mean, but it's a very enjoyable show.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
nothing can ever "live up to the hype" because now you'll be looking for problems or trying to awkwardly fit the story into your own preconceived notions about what is or is not good storytelling

just watch it, and decide for yourself if you like it
