I'm still trying to figure out how so many people got Gyraidoses (whatever the hell the spelling is) so quickly. I have a gym near my house and I swear there were people with those things within a week of the game release -- and this was back in the time it wouldn't load 60% of the time.

It gets even weirder because we're like 15 miles inland and the only way to a MagiCarp is by the beach, afaik.

There's a spot outside my home that reliably spawns magikarp and the duck things at least once an hour. The closest water is the swimming pool halfway across the neighborhood, and it mostly gets pidgies and spearows.

I'm 80% of the way to evolving my 2nd magikarp, even though I've used eggs to max power up the first one.

My sister-in-law has at least three Gyrados because her workplace is next to a river and she goes out every break and hunts Magikarp obsessively. And now she has a giant Dragonite. Meanwhile, I just got my first Dratini and my first 1000+ pokemon. So I think some of it is a function of how much time and effort you put in.

When I went on vacation in August, my friends and I walked around the harbor there for about two hours and we ended up with close to 300 candies each because those things spawned all over the place there. Some places spawn a lot more than others.

I have had a Magikarp hatch from an egg, so maybe that is how people are getting those at least. I'm 2hrs from the nearest beach, so this is probably the only way I'll see one unless they spawn randomly in bathtubs or something.

I live in Kansas and I catch magikarp by any old body of water and sometimes when there's not really a body of water close by? I've caught them on sidewalks and while in the passenger seat of cars while the nearest body of water is I don't even know where. I managed to get a gyrados just by catching enough magikarp to eventually evolve one. It took me a while, but I managed.

I've caught Magikarp in fountains before. There's one about a half mile away that likes to spawn Magikarp and Psyducks.

Yeah same! I wasn't even counting fountains as 'bodies of water', but that might explain why I can find so many Magikarps (and Psyducks actually) in random places. I live in Kansas City, which has about 8,000 fountains.

When I was playing a lot I went to a public square where 3 lures were running the whole time we were there and I caught a dratini like every 5 minutes. I have never caught a dratini anywhere else in my city. I'm thinking there is a similar spot in your area and these people have spent a lot of time there?

OP

I live within driving distance of San Francisco, though I don't need to go there for anything. I've heard Dratinis spawn a lot near major landmarks, so maybe there's a spawn point by the Golden Gate Bridge or something.

I'm Mysticfied, too, honestly -- it took me weeks and weeks to have a (not even strong) Dragonite; all I have in my arsenal are a few Lapras and Snorlaces. I guess all of Team Blue works in the City and spends hours every day on popular public piers or beaches? I can't afford that; I need to work.

It drives me nuts too. I've never even seen a Dratini in this city (not even on the radar). I have no idea where people might be catching enough of them to get a Dragonite. (I need to figure out this secret....)

In all honesty, my guess is they're using exploits to force Dragonites to spawn, like that person in Ohio who forced an Articuno spawn and claimed Niantic had given it to her.

There was a girl in my country that claimed she caught the 150, except you still cannot catch the legendary birds AND Mewtwo to get the 150 fully. I bet either Niantic banned her ass for it (if she was using hacks) or no one believe in her anymore.

If all the usernames are similar - like you said, male names with a bunch of numbers after - they're bots. You can screenshot them and send them to Niantic and get the accounts terminated though.
There was a level 9 gym in my 'hood that was occupied for over a week all with 2000+ Snorlax, Lapras etc. Took a cap, sent it to Niantic with a message just saying "Hey I think this gym is full of bots" and the gym was clear a couple days layer.

In my city you only can see Arcanines in the gyms.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
There's probably a spawn point somewhere. There's a Pikachu one in a park near my house; I have two Raichus so far and am working on a third all thanks to that spawn point.

With all the random numbers, they probably are bots, but Dragonites do spawn in the wild. I was (un)lucky enough to be there when it happened one, but mine ran. The base CP of them is, if you're level 20 or higher, often 1900+.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
hackers and bots is the answer

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
It could be hackers but it could also be location luck. My city is surrounded by water and if I cared more, I could walk along the various riverbanks with some incense and probably catch enough Dratini in maybe a week -- I've caught a few just sitting in my Ubers while passing through the right areas. The gyms around here are Dragonite Centrals for sure.

Also today I just caught close to 30 Magikarps in the hour and a half I sat working at this riverside cafe near my house that is within range of 2 fully-lured Pokestops.

Fire types though? I've only ever caught any while on vacation :v
