Jane Russell is amazing in that film, I agree. But honestly what I hate about the reception of this film is how much it's used to talk about what a huge sex symbol Marilyn was. She gives a genuinely excellent performance as a comic actress, but all anyone talks about is that pink dress and the one song.

(Seriously, "That'll take an hour and forty minutes". Cracks my shit up every time.)

I agree. I love Marilyn's comedy.

Right? That's the only thing most people know from the film and it doesn't really tell you just how funny the movie is. Both Monroe and Russell are hilarious.

I DIED watching her scenes in 'Some Like It Hot'

This comment makes me want to watch this movie now.

That last pic in amazing - those eyes!

Jane Russell is so hot in that movie. It's ridiculous.

Also funny and great but seriously God damn

You should read her autobiography!

There's a bittersweet passage that I still remember to this day (it's been like 15+ years when I read it, so my memory may be a little hazy on the details).
Jane describes being holed up in a hotel(? iirc) room with Marilyn. She's admiring Marilyn's naked (or partially naked? I forget) body that's leaning against the balcony, and Jane compliments it. Marilyn goes all sad and quiet and says how she wishes she had Jane's humor and comedic talent so she wouldn't have to rely on her looks. And Jane basically laments how in the end, neither got what they wanted because Jane was seen as just the funny girl next to Marilyn.

Aw :(

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oof. That's poignant.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. That seems weird to me, because Jane Russell was primarily famous for her looks as well-- in particularly, her spectacular rack. I'd say she and Marilyn were pretty much in the same boat.

Now I definitely want to watch this. I could use a good comedy.

This movie is so, so, so funny! And the scene you pictured at the bottom, Jane ogling all the guys? Freakin' hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Freakin HOT. Old school muscle men are my thing. I like the current crop too, don't get me wrong. Narcissistic Instagram Hunks are a boon, but those rigged men of yesteryear are something else. WOOF.

HA, yes. Plus it was all so *innocent*. Yes, they're posing, but it wasn't the over-the-top sexuality people have now. Which isn't a *bad* thing, it's just...different. And i like it.

AYRT.

I think it's interesting that the workout was seen as obviously sexual back then. Today, people still know there's an inherent sexual appeal there but often try to deny it, even when half of the men and even women in the fitness industry fully acknowledge or outright embrace that part. Health is a side effect of making yourself really really good looking for potential sex partners.

And I meant "rugged", not "rigged", but I think you figured that out already.

Exactly. It was! But at the same time, it wasn't...in your face? I dunno.

Yeah, no worries. :)

I can't believe they got away with all the guys wearing skintone colored swim trunks

"It's like I'm wearing nothing at all! ~all! ~all!"

YES! Ah ha ha. So fun.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ever since I was little, I wanted to grow up to be Jane Russell in that role. Awesome secret!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
this is a great movie!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they were both wonderful in this movie but Jane Russell is my fave because her character is so dry and sarcastic.

Oh man, that was such a great number, her timing really was spot on.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-19 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
And, of course, my favorite part of the movie is when Jane impersonates Marilyn...It just cracks me up.
