LF Two TV Shows

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-09-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am looking for a comedic TV show to watch on the treadmill. I've enjoyed Parks and Rec, Scrubs, Archer, Bob's Burgers, and Malcolm in the Middle. I did not like HIMYM or The Office.

I am also looking for a more serious show to watch on my computer. I thought about watching Penny Dreadful because I'd like to watch a horror/supernatural show without a lot of relationship drama (like Teen Wolf, Supernatural, any show on the CW). Does that seem like a good choice? If not, any recommendations?

Or, any great drama shows? Perhaps something similar to Broadchurch?

I suggest 30 Rock for the treadmill show!

Also, I don't think it's what anyone would call "serious" necessarily, but having just started a rewatch of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I'm always impressed by how sprawling and detailed it is.

Oh! 30 Rock is a fantastic suggestion. Seems like an obvious choice after Parks and Rec and I think it is on netflix.

Comedic show, maybe Portlandia or Brooklyn Nine-nine.

I've been wanting to watch B99 but I think it is only on Hulu or something. :(

Do you have a DVD player where ever you run? Perhaps your library has it on DVD so you can borrow it. That's how I can see things that are only one or the other.

Comedy: Key and Peele, Brooklyn 99, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Serious: watch Penny Dreadful if you're into gothic horror, but be prepared for an abrupt ending (still, worth watching imo)

I've seen some of IASIP. Maybe I should finally commit to watching the whole thing. I know it is on netflix.

Was Penny Dreadful canceled? :(

PD was canceled mid-season and they wrapped up the show very hastily

If you liked Broadchurch, you might enjoy Shetland. I think it has a very similar vibe and also scenery porn.

Thanks. I am looking for some more BBC dramas since they seem to do them so well. And they are usually less 'showy' than American ones.

Let's see

Our comedy tastes don't have a whole lot of overlap but maybe Raising Hope or That 70s Show (the first few seasons).

I don't know about Penny Dreadful, but maybe X-Files (I'd say the first four or so seasons are the best). Fringe is also quite good.

West Wing is a generally great drama. For something sort of similar to Broadchurch, maybe The Bletchley Circle (it's post-WWII mystery).

Other good shows available on Netflix are White Collar, Leverage, Warehouse 13, and Eureka, consider them light dramas.

Seconding The Bletchley Circle. But don't get used to it, if you do end up liking it. Very few episodes and cancelled too soon. :(

I've seen X-Files and did enjoy it! I'll look at Bletchly Circle, hopefully it is on Netflix or Amazon.

I've been meaning to rewatch leverage, so maybe I will do that since it is on Netflix.

30 Rock is a fantastic choice for a comedy show. Also Red Dwarf is one of my favourites. It's an English sci-fi sitcom originally started in 1988 and currently back on air with a new series this year and another next year.

If you're after a British drama that's a little like Broadchurch you could try Blackpool. David Tennent plays a detective investigating a murder in a town with many secrets and the occasional song and dance number.

Oh! I've heard of Blackpool. I need to see if I can find it somewhere online.

Blackpool is really very good. It used to be on Hulu but I think that was years ago.
