It does everything right that's good about fantasy and fairy tales and avoids what's wrong with those genres. It goes from poetic to melancholy to adventurous to comedic to serious and back without missing a beat. It's magical in the truest sense of the word.

I often felt too old for the story while reading Harry Potter, but never so with The Last Unicorn. It's timeless and ageless. HP is trying, TLU is doing.

Are you sold yet?

"HP is trying, TLU is doing."
Yeah okay, sold :) I think I always confused it with my impressions of Not Wanted on the Voyage which is a very very very different story

My job here is done. Yes! :)

However, I also called Naomi Novik's dragon book a pile of garbage that is only fit for a dumpster, or something along those lines. So my taste is definitely not for everyone.

DA -- Eh, I enjoyed the Temeraire books for what they were, but anything written by Peter Beagle blows them so far out of the water that no water remains. Naomi Novik writes the fantasy AU version of trashy bodice rippers. They're a fun way to scratch an itch, but they're not particularly meaningful or well-written.

I don't usually read fantasy, so I chose HP and Novik as basis points for comparison, because I have actually (or at least attempted to) read those, and they're both popular, best-selling and award-winning novels.

But I totally agree, even if you only read the first one or two pages of each, the difference in writing quality is painfully obvious. It doesn't matter where the plot or the characters are going, the writing alone makes Beagle's book a joy to read. And that's not true for the other two.
