Teenagers who are adults?

Heh.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
This movie sure didn't corner the market on that.

Actually, no.

David Krumholtz and Andrew Keegan were 20 when it was released in March 1999. Heath Leger was not quite 20. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was 18, Julia Stiles had just turned 18, and Larisa Oleynik wasn’t yet 18. Now, Gabrielle Union and Susan May Pratt were 25, but I would say this particular movie had most of its main teenage characters being played by teenagers.

Yes, a classic for sure!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
This is totally fair. That was a good movie.

I don't know what you're referring to specifically about that movie that worked for you compared to other teen movies. But I enjoyed that Kat never cared about popularity. That is a trope I can do without, and so many teen movies revolve around it.

I don't have a problem with this movie but I've never gotten its massive appeal. Even though it contains a massive shout out to my alma matter.

Shakespeare has that effect on people.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Yes?

Yes. That movie is basically a modern version of "Taming of the Shrew".

Dude I was just watching this on the plane coming home last night. Weird.

I liked Clueless more.

It's amusing enough but watching it with 2016 eyes--the JGL character is such a fucking Nice Guy. HE obsesses over her at first sight (which makes him as shallow as he later accuses her of being), HE fakes knowing French just to be able to talk to her (so, he tries to manipulate her)--he does all of these antics to "set her free" and then gets so pissy because she chooses someone else. Bianca's a great character (and Kat and Patrick are great as well) but I can't stand Cameron.

Late millennium movies are something else. Watching American Pie nowadays--the shit they pull with Nadia, taping her and broadcasting it HAHAHAHA JUST TEENAGE BOY SEX HIJINKS--makes my skin crawl.

It's backwash from "The Taming of the Shrew," I think - they work hard to get around the weird misogyny that's all over the play, but it's so baked into the premise that it still shows up.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Swap that with the John Hughes canon and I'm in. As this is, however, I'm still with you. I just want more high school comedies, period. If it's all white suburban kids then I'll suck it up and deal, but I'd love to see this applied to a broader cultural demographic (And of course some LGBT characters who actually have romantic lives and aren't tragedies.)

If it's 40 year olds playing teenagers then I'll deal with that too. Especially if they're really hot 40 year olds. It will make it less creepy if I start crushing on any of the characters.
