I have, actually.

And, I'm not saying there should not be (external) care if needed, but segregating them into old people communes seems really weird to me. I'm pretty sure that if I ever get to be old, I wouldn't want to be surrounded by old people.

nayrt but my grandma is in a home, because she is literally at constant risk of falling and breaking bones, or dying. She is not mentally capable enough to take care of herself, and we work, we don't have the time - or, for that matter, a house safe enough for her to be in (just to get inside you have to walk up stairs). I don't think you should judge the idea of putting the elderly in homes where they can be cared for by people whose job it is to care for them. I mean, we shouldn't shut up our old folks and abandon them, obviously - we see our grandma several times a week - but a nursing home is absolutely the perfect place for her to be.

I don't think I'd call it segregation, per se. The kind of homes that provide the level of medical assistance necessary are naturally going to be full of older people because surprise, that's when a lot of peoples' ability to care for themselves diminishes. What alternative would you suggest for people whose families are unable to provide the same level of 24/7 monitoring plus healthcare?

Retirement communities exist because older people with money often voluntarily wish to live in a neighborhood designed especially for them and they don't necessarily want to live near noisy families and younger people. Some of them have strict rules and minimum age limits to enforce that and again-- people CHOOSE to live there, they're not being sent there like it's a work camp.
