Of course it can.

I think entertainment, for many people, depends on a pushing of boundaries that we wouldn't push in real life.

I think that's a generalization you're making based on your own tastes, which is an easy trap to fall into. Entertainment depends on a million different variables to every single person, and I would hesitate to say one thing applies to most, or even "many." Like, some people find fart jokes hilarious. Some people don't. There's also a million shades of grey in there too, between "finds funny" and "does not find funny."

Of course some people find boundary-pushing entertaining (we can look at the success of shows like Family Guy and South Park to prove that), but saying that for many, entertainment depends on it...that's a stretch I can't quite subscribe to.

I wouldn't class sex as boundary-pushing, tbh. Especially a boundary we wouldn't push in real life.

And there's universes of non-violent entertainment out there? There's a huge difference between popular and integral. Violent material is always going to be popular (for any number of reasons, ranging from amusement to good old fashioned catharsis), but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone that needs violence in order to be entertained.

OK, maybe not sex in general, but nudity certainly is problematic, isn't it? Especially female nudity if not properly balanced by male nudity.

But yes, I'll concede that I'm generalizing based on what's popular.

I mean...that really depends on who you ask? I've certainly run into more people that think that making the naked form a problematic thing in and of itself is the worser sin, but I suppose I see the point behind "if it's not balanced by male nudity."

I'll be honest with you, though, I'm not sure how that relates back to the original discussion. Genuine question, no snark intended: are you saying that in the case of nudity being considered problematic, the work is more entertaining? In other words, boobs = more entertainment? Because I'm not sure I can buy into that either, considering how much out there has none at all.

You're right that people want all kinds of things from their entertainment, not just boundary-pushing. I mean, there's a reason Touched by an Angel was so popular, right?

Right, exactly, that's all I was meaning to say. "Problematic" entertainment is absolutely popular (and for perfectly good reasons that no one should be shamed over), I just hesitate to say that there's a necessary correlation between them.

I think it is because the authors of them don't stop to consider the supply chain and ignore the problems and abuses inherent in both the coffee trade and retail industry. Whatever else they are, coffeeshop AUs are still problematic as hell.
