Context matters, but I think one shouldn't forget the context that Sarah herself was being childish and self-centered. Her stepmother isn't a wicked stepmother, she's (justifiably) exasperated. Her line was "I ask you to babysit only if it won't interfere with your plans!" Her stepmother assumes that Sarah would tell her about any plans, but she never says that she has anything else going on.

Miscommunication, maybe, but Sarah also throws a temper tantrum about it. It's very typical teenage drama, and her experience in the Labyrinth helps her grow up a bit.
