Hiking. Geocaching. Learning card tricks/sleight of hand. Making mail art. Postcrossing/finding a pen pal. Learning how to cook. Embroidery isn't too expensive if you're in the U.S. because embroidery floss is maybe .35-.40 each and you only use a few strands at a time, plus you can embroider on pieces of scrap cloth, old pillowcases from the thrift store or even plain old felt which usually runs .25-.33 a square.
