What are some cheap things people can do for fun?

Or cheap hobbies they can get into.

I think writing is the cheapest hobby.

It was a shock for me to go from writing to picking up other hobbies like knitting and realizing that I need to pay to do it.

That was my thought, too! Writing has got to be the cheapest hobby of mine that makes me the happiest by far.

Knitting/crocheting can be cheap; when I was a broke teenager I used to use Red Heart yarn and had one crochet hook that I made everything with. And I made mostly beanies and scarves, so I didn't need to buy pattern books.

Drawing. You can do lots of stuff with very simple tools - a pack of semi-decent paper and graphite, or a pack of watercolor paper and a paintbrush and a bottle of black ink, or paper and charcoal. You can get beautiful results without actually investing tons of money.

Origami. All you need is paper!

Hiking.

Ooh yes, origami. I went through a phase where I filled my room with a bunch of simple, tiny origami pieces made from post-it notes.

+1 to all

Although the really pretty, colourful origami paper is really expensive. :(

Walking or running. Reading if you have access to a library, drawing, parlour tricks like card tricks, juggling, etc., and some crafts can be really cheap. I just made an Autumn wreath for a whopping £3.

A lot of hobbies can be cheap or expensive, depending on how hardcore you want to go. Take hiking -- you can do it for the price of a reasonably sturdy pair of shoes, or you can buy out your local sporting goods shop, or all kinds of in between.

Still -- cheap/free fun: Local libraries have books, movies, sometimes video games for free. A lot of them also have discount passes to various attractions, museums, etc.

Also, if you have a community recreation center, they probably offer intramural sports and various classes (like cooking, dancing, drawing, tai chi, etc.) The classes probably aren't free, but they're probably relatively inexpensive.

Decoupage?

Hiking. Geocaching. Learning card tricks/sleight of hand. Making mail art. Postcrossing/finding a pen pal. Learning how to cook. Embroidery isn't too expensive if you're in the U.S. because embroidery floss is maybe .35-.40 each and you only use a few strands at a time, plus you can embroider on pieces of scrap cloth, old pillowcases from the thrift store or even plain old felt which usually runs .25-.33 a square.

Definitely reading from the library. Check and see if your library offers movies/video games. Mine has a fairly extensive foreign film collection so I got into indie films.

I didn't find knitting to be that expensive of a hobby if you stick to the basic yarns and needles.

I don't know where you are but if you're in the US near a major city, see what specials deals there are on museums in your area. Again, US related, if you have a Bank of America credit card, it gets you in to select museums for free the first weekend of every month. I've taken advantage of this to explore different places I wouldn't have gone otherwise. Also along this route, some libraries offer museum passes.

My library also offers free programs, such as special guest lectures. If you're a decently populated area, check the surrounding towns and see what their libraries offer.

Look in to a writing group or book club if you're looking more for social aspect.

Good luck!

Learn to bake bread. A lot of loaves can just be baked on a cookie sheet so you don't need special pans. Knead by hand - no stand mixer required. Look for some books on bread and baking at the library and experiment with yeast (it's tricky, not gonna lie).

Maybe something like birding or the equivalent with plants and rocks. Find some guides at the library and take walks wherever you can go to see nature and see how many trees, flowers, etc. you can identify. Keep a diary or list. You can also keep a photo log if you have a camera or a phone with a camera.
