Definitely reading from the library. Check and see if your library offers movies/video games. Mine has a fairly extensive foreign film collection so I got into indie films.

I didn't find knitting to be that expensive of a hobby if you stick to the basic yarns and needles.

I don't know where you are but if you're in the US near a major city, see what specials deals there are on museums in your area. Again, US related, if you have a Bank of America credit card, it gets you in to select museums for free the first weekend of every month. I've taken advantage of this to explore different places I wouldn't have gone otherwise. Also along this route, some libraries offer museum passes.

My library also offers free programs, such as special guest lectures. If you're a decently populated area, check the surrounding towns and see what their libraries offer.

Look in to a writing group or book club if you're looking more for social aspect.
