Days late so I'd be surprised if you see this, OP, but if it helps, Greg Cox also wrote "The Rings of Time" about the Shaun Christopher mission to Saturn in the 2020s, and he doesn't bother trying to fit it with modern tech or historical events at all, he just goes outright "yeah it's a 2001-Discovery-esque ship going to Saturn" while also bringing in touches of modern-day culture.

(Also, while this obviously shouldn't impact your opinion of the work since there's no way to know this from reading them, he's actually said before that he didn't do it because he thought he _had_ to, but rather because he _wanted_ to. He wanted to see if he could both fit it into modern history _and_ reference basically every single 20th century Trek thing all in one duology. It was for the sake of fun was all. :P)
