fucking call her useless, much less to the plot.

I'm curious, then: what do you think would change if she was written out of Part One entirely? Because she definitely became less useless in Part Two, but in Part One she seemed to exist solely to make the boys look awesome by comparison.

Butting in

I'm guessing you gave this about as much thought as your reasons for disliking characters.
Sakura's point, though not obvious, is another reaffirmation of the series' credos - hard work is just as important (if not more so) as blatant talent, fight for what/who you believe in, character development, etc etc... So she doesn't do much in the first part, not as far as fighting goes. But she provides an irreplacable part of the group emotionally. She's the only one in Team 7 who had a completely normal childhood, and is immature compared to Naruto and Sasuke in that respect, because she doesn't understand their loneliness. But because she values them both deeply, she has to mature to understand it and continue reaching out to them, instead of shying from the subject around them.
I think a lot would change if she wasn't there. One, in the Forest of Death, Sasuke would not have released the curse seal for the first time. He was willing to KILL somebody to protect Sakura when she needed it, because although he's a bit of a fucked-up twat who will deny this at every turn, he DOES care about a few people around him - namely, Team 7. Kakashi he respects, Sakura he respects and sort of like, but never in the way she wants him to, and I'm not touching the Sasuke & Naruto relationship with a ten foot pole. I'd be here for 10 comments.
Before I overrun the comment limit, I'll make the TL;DR and say again that Sakura isn't useless, even though it might appear so. Please learn to read more subtle lines of plot.

Fair enough, but as you yourself pointed out, you could have substituted any other member of team Seven in there (OK, not Kakashi that would not work on several levels, but Naruto) and nothing would change. Sakura throughout the whole of Part One has an effect on the plot the size of a pea. Of course there will be changes if you remove someone with as much screentime as her, but would it be anything significant? I can't see how. She doesn't do anything herself, and as far as Naruto and Sasuke go on a personal level, she almost always finds herself in the position of 'odd man out': the one sitting by the sidelines, watching as they be pseudo-awesome.

No, you couldn't substitute her. Because, like in real life, a relationship someone has between one person will never be exactly the same as another. Ssauke may respect Kakashi, but I doubt he'd kill somebody to try and protect him. Yes, she has no bearing on the plot. But that doesn't necessarily make her useless, because she's still important to the characters around her.
And hey, if we want to talk about useless to the plot, how about the main character himself! Naruto RARELY propels the story forward himself, he's usually just reacting to the action going on around him. So, I guess he's COMPLETELY useless now and I should completely hate his guts, despite being pretty fucking incredible.

If a character does not contribute to the plot, he/she is useless! This doesn't need to be a direct contribution to the plot, it can even be supporting from the sidelines, but there needs to be something. And the more screentime he/she has, the more he/she has to do to not be useless, because there is a ratio at work here. It's moronic to say that a character who appeared in one episode was useless for not contributing as much to the plot as the protagonist, because there was no space in which for him/her to do things. But a character who reoccurs, over and over, getting more screentime than 75% of the cast, should contribute to make him/her worth the space he/she's taking up.

Sakura has not done this! She has not affected the plot in any meaningful way, she has not affected the characters around her very much because the dynamic that gets the most attention is between Kakashi, Naruto, and Sasuke, she just didn't do squat until partway through Part Two, and even that contribution pales in comparison to what characters less significant than her have thrown in.

I'm glad you like her. But please, don't try to claim that she contributes massively to the manga.

And hey, if we want to talk about useless to the plot, how about the main character himself! Naruto RARELY propels the story forward himself, he's usually just reacting to the action going on around him.

Oh please. I hate Naruto for completely different reasons, but now you're just throwing shit out there for the sake of it.

What, like Sakura?
I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree, because while her role may not be active enough for the amount of screentime she gets, I still think it's pretty damn important.

When did I say "massively"? You're putting words in my mouth. I've been agreeing with you to an extent, she doesn't do much for the plot, no. But I do still think she's important. "Massively"? That's kinda stretching it.

And no, not really. The only time I can actually think of Naruto actively pushing the plot is during the Sasuke Rescue Arc when he gathered a team because he wanted to go after Sasuke.
