I like the trope, but with the caveat that it has to be executed well (and I will grant you that it's hard to do well and botched a lot of the time).

I'm with you on all of this. In a sense, redemption-by-love could actually be quite profound; a person awakening to the realization that there is a person who is more important to them than themselves, or than their desire to rule the world or destroy or whatever. Showing them beauty. Or simply because they suddenly value another person and their opinion, it makes them rethink things that they had taken for granted, and their interaction with the world.
WHEN DONE WELL. Which as you point out, if often isn't, so bleh.

Superior might be to your taste. A genocidal tyrant meets the hero who plans to defeat her, and she's so baffled by his views that she follows him to try to figure him out. It's a slow road to not being evil, and she makes some terrible choices along the way. (Warning for a bit of old-school Japanese sexism, but it's brief and a lot milder than stuff like Fist of the North Star.)

I love villain redemption stories and will kind of eat them up regardless of how well done they are, but well-crafted ones are 100% more satisfying to watch/read and if I got to choose I'd pick the latter every time(even if I didn't get it as often).

I think the meaning of "redemption" is to some extent character-specific. If you've got a violent jerk who brutalizes the heroes, and he's convinced to side with the heroes, that might just make him a violent jerk who brutalizes the villains. It's a common mistake among fan writers to treat redeeming each villain as giving each villain the same personality.

This is, in a nutshell, my entire problem with Flash Thompson in the latest Spiderman cartoon. He goes straight from attacking other kids at school to attacking villains and as long as he's brutalizing an 'acceptable' target he's a hero.

My first thought is Kylo Ren and Loki. I really want redemption arcs for both of them but I'm just not sure how well they'll turn out. I feel like Loki has more groundwork with his relationship with Thor so it feels a little more plausible. I feel we don't know enough about Kylo yet to judge.

Well, Loki has already had multiple opportunities to change and redeem himself, but hasn't taken them.

I kind of feel this way about fics about love in general. Or media. Or most anything.

Maybe I just take an absurdly long time to warm up to people, but five conversations doesn't really tell me much about someone except whether or not I like them. Doesn't matter whether or not I find them physically attractive. Most fiction just seems to skip right to "okay now we're boning".

Slightly OT, but I'm fascinated by other people's response to this trope. The Redemption Arc + Beauty and the Beast narrative is so entrenched in so many people's minds, that I've seen it projected onto all kinds of stories where it's obviously not there at all - for instance, Zuko/Katara, Kylo/Rey, Marian/Guy in the 2006 Robin Hood.

I'm not sure why exactly, but it's kind of amazing to see viewers graft this narrative onto stories where it's simply not - and of course, lose their shit when that becomes undeniable.

I love Beauty and the Beast stories and will put up with a lot of bullshit for them, but I don't get Kylo/Rey because I don't see the trope there, not even a darker variant like Phantom of the Opera where there is abuse involved. I don't know enough about Last Airbender or that Robin Hood variant to say much, except in the one case Zuko was redeemed without romantic love having much (anything?) to do with it and in the other Guy killed Marian, so I wouldn't cringe as hard at Zutara shippers as at Guy/Marian shippers.

Is it bad that I sometimes want the opposite? Intelligent, purposeful, fucked-up villains slowly and not entirely knowingly luring the hero/heroine to the dark side out of real and genuine love? Where the villain offers the chance to rule together and the hero says yes and it works, because the hero's spent the whole story so far gradually realising that 'you are messed up and amazingly cruel and kind of terrifying, but you've got a streak of integrity in an amazingly twisted sort of way, and I think you really do love me, and that one time you almost died in front of me I realised I would burn the world for you'. And this is not entirely what the villain expected but it's better and by golly they're taking it while it's on offer and woe betide anyone who tries to get in the way.

Ahem. What I mean is, I sometimes kind of want stories that go from good-vs-evil to the hero's start of darkness because the hero and the villain genuinely fall in love with each other and decide they were going to rule the world.

Have you seen the show Hannibal? I'm not sure how genuine Hannibal's love for Will is, but it is very much a "good guy goes to the evil side because of the influence of an erotic/twisted love relationship."

I love corruption stories right along with the redemption stories OP's talking about.

I also like redemption stories. But my conditions are:

A. They can't be mass murderers/murdering innocents for fun. There's a point of no return for me.

B. Love's good, but even better if it's familial love.

C. And even better when the person chooses to change their ways on they're own. They saw what they were doing was hurting people and want to do better. They aren't doing it for validation from other people.

Yeah, this is why I could never get into Shizaya. A lot of fic involved Izaya deciding to become a better person bc Shizuo stuck his dick in him. :/
