Yeah, but like... I'm not even IN these fandoms and I keep running into shit about how racist Klance is and how white people shouldn't ever try to write it because they can't possibly understand what it's like to be Space!Hispanic. Same with StormPilot. Same with Overwatch pairings (???).

Doesn't really make me want to wade into that mess.

This. I've been both a fan of Stormpilot and Kylux, but was driven out of the Stormpilot fandom by the zealous gatekeepers and assholes who tried to police the ways Stormpilot should be written and if you didn't do it their way, you were an evil racist.
And then the exact same people had the gall to "call out" the Kylux fandom for being racist whitecock shippers and... yeah, guess what? Kylux only got really huge after the people in the Stormpilot fandom started driving people away from the ship.

AYRT is confusing two issues - a fanartist who drew Hux as a fairly small looking twink (and aside from the height, that's not exactly a wrong depiction) and also a younger version of him got bullied with the pedophile accusations. The people attacking the bottom Hux side had more of a problem with "wah, Evil gay stereotypes" - both were shitty, though. It is, however, a fairly recent development.

Amusingly, this only started happening a few months ago - strangely coinciding with the time a huge amount of shippers switched camp.
I've been in the Kylux fandom from the start and the first few months were very chill.

I don't think they are necessarily saying ships like Klance are racist, but that people often use cliche tropes while writing that are, well, a little racist

Like, people writing Lance as a whole Latin Lover stereotype, where every time he speaks Spanish, Keith gets wet because Spanish is an inherently sexy language instead of just, you know, a language

It's an expression, but there is admittedly a lot of omegaverse shit in the Voltron fandom. However, from what I've seen, people tend to lean toward omega!Lance, so he's the one getting wet, I guess.

Yeah trans!Keith is popular, but it's so boring, imo. I think it's because everyone in the fandom sees him as gay and there are a lot of gay trans guys on tumblr, so they want to make him trans for self-insert purposes. Trans!Lance and Trans!Shiro are more interesting, imo.

IKR. It's obnoxious how people love to pepper Lance's dialogue with Spanish because it's ~sexy~ even though he never speaks Spanish in the show, lol. It's also stupid when he'll speak Spanish to Keith in fic when Keith has no idea what he's saying. I'm bilingual, but I'm not going to talk in a language in front of people who have no idea what I'm saying.

I lol, not in this fandom but am also bilingual and yeah some words are not translatable but you explain unless it is a curse word. Why I lol - my mum often speaks Polish at my boyfriend while he speaks English at her and I am the go-between. It is quite annoying when writers insert whole dialogue and run into that in books even. Then there is people who expect certain language from certain ethnicity without it being canon (or being because there could be a fic where someone moves elsewhere).

Funny, I see more Klance shippers claim their ship is more progressive than Sheith because theirs is interracial and that Shiro, the explicitly Japanese character, is "white passing" and doesn't really count as a POC. I've never seen anyone call Klance racist, though I have come across one BNF claiming it's racist to make Keith bottom because he's Asian (which he isn't, he hasn't been clarified as anything yet).
