Phobias/Fears

What are some almost lifelong fears you have overcome? How did you do it?

I used to be terrified of sharks when I was a kid, not sure why really I just saw a picture of them one day and it freaked me out, found out they lived in the sea and I was like 'I'm never going in the ocean'. Basically, I thought they were as vicious as they looked.

I didn't make a conscious decision to overcome this fear but the older I got my fear mixed with curiosity and I ended up reading a lot about them and as a result my fear went away and they are now my favourite sea-creature. Yay sharks!

I wouldn't call it a phobia... but. I did use to have this incredible fear of failure that would just stop me from trying to do things that I thought I couldn't accomplish.

I think the only thing that let me overcome it was coming face to face with the fact that I'm going to die someday at a fairly young age. I mean, I was right there. I didn't really have that much more time. It definitely made me wake up and think about the fact that everything is fragile and tenuous, and there's no point in letting the possibility of failure stop you from trying to do something.

Now, I'm still afraid of failing, but I use that more as a driving force than anything else. I use it when I don't have energy and I'm feeling too lazy to get up and do things. It's kind of useful to be able to go, "If you don't fucking read this right now you could fail." and have the natural OH SHIT reaction right there to get me off my ass.

Ticks; then I did get one on me and found out that you can get a preventative Lyme disease pill for $5 and now I'm over it.

What pill is this?

nayrt - No idea what ayrt is talking about, but suspect they've been BSed or are simply misunderstanding. There is no preventative Lyme disease pill. There are studies that suggest taking antibiotics within 72 hours of an infected tick bite will prevent it, but that's assuming you know you've been bitten. Sometimes the symptoms of Lyme disease don't show up until a few weeks afterwards. So it's not like a vaccine where you can just take it and be safe.

Needles, more concerning blood tests and IVs than shots. Two pregnancies, one of them with gestational diabetes, have gotten me to the point where I still don't like them but can handle then when necessary. For reference, I used to pass out just thinking about having a blood test done.

don't think I have totally overcome it, but as an adult my fear of heights is not the huge problem it was when I was a child. I think part of that though is avoiding using overpasses that are very open-air, or old construction. Also having music to listen to when walking over something with a lot of empty space under it.

I also sometimes have reactions to escalators, which I simply walk a bit further to find a lift instead, because no one needs me having a freakout on a downward escalator. (It's always downward, I don't have the problem on upwards ones, because downwards seems more likely to have a bad fall on.)
