(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)The only way not to be racist is to agree with you. Thing is, for the (average) white fan, it's never about representation or race. It's just about fun, and bringing racism into it is making it not fun. Now I get that it's incredibly not fun for you, and for that I'm sorry, but if in one fandom I ship the whitecock instead of the cock of color, I'm not going to force myself to churn out a bunch of fics about cocks of color. No one will. It wouldn't be fun for me. You're more than free yourself to do it, though. Or leave comments/praise on the people who do.
I do feel like fandom is slowly getting better than that. It's a long process, though. Internet being what is it, the social justice inclined want change and they want it right now and perfect and never offending anyone, and that just won't happen. It's just setting yourself up for disappointment. Some people will grow and learn from harsh critique, but some people will just come back into their shells, or leave for greener pastures where it can be fun again.

This is why I didn't even bother pointing out that the notion is demonstrably untrue if you look at fic counts on AO3, this time. ~Whitecock~ shipping of minor characters who barely interact at the expense of interesting and attractive major POC characters is the exception, not the rule. That's just a fact. But hell last time I did I cited about 20 fandoms - almost every single one I've ever been a part of - but they were simply dismissed as "exceptions" because hey, if you say it, and you're aggrieved about a social issue, you're automatically correct. No evidence necessary.
The real problem being lack of representation of POC but hey why try to fix real problems when you can whinge about fanporn.
