Lee Pace's lead character in Halt and Catch Fire is bi. (Though he's less of a lead after Season One, he still has a major role.) Da Vinci's Demons has been cancelled now and was very daft when it was on but the lead in that was bi as well. Black Sails is very much up for debate label wise and I can't get too into it without spoilers but the male lead is definitely not straight.

(Not contradicting your general point, just giving some rare counter examples.)
