Yep. Bisexual erasure is a thing. It's pretty frustrating to see on either end, but I can't even think of a show where they've been allowed to have a bisexual male character. At least a few recent shows have decided that's an acceptable sexuality for female characters to have. Even things where the source material is like, "YEP. TOTALLY A BISEXUAL MAN HERE." it gets changed for television (thinking about the recent Constantine adaptation).

I guess we're only just getting to the stages where we can have gay characters who aren't played as giant jokes though, so maybe in the next ten years we'll have some more bisexual characters around.

Haven't watched it but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has a canonically bi male character on it

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'll be.

...Seems like the type of show I would absolutely hate, but I'll give it points anyway!
nightscale: My sun and stars (Shadowhunters: Magnus Bane)

Shadowhunters has Magnus as a bi male character, an eastern asian male as well which is something you really don't see very often.

But yeah the Constantine thing bugged me too, it wasn't like it was a fan-thing, it's canon. Please don't remove it? :|

I feel like Constantine WANTED to be bi - like, a few offhand remarks make me suspect. But, all very subtext.

Halt and Catch Fire has a bisexual male lead, played by Lee Pace.

Although the focus is so far not on his same sex relationships. But there have been glimpses of it.

Well, no. But it's not really on any of his *sexual* relationships. But he's openly bi, and shown to have male lovers, so - better than most shows.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, totally. I would have been interested to see a somewhat serious relationship with a man though, after Cameron in season 1 and his wife in season 2. (Haven't seen season 3 yet.)

I would, too, though to me, the character seems to be 'serious' about female lovers because they bring him legitimacy in the eyes of red-neck Texans, if you know what I mean.

I can only hope things keep moving in the same direction and more shows realize that bi characters are actually good things.
*sigh*

His sexuality does come up as a plot point in S3 as well. Joe is awful at relationships though so I'm not sure whether he's going to get any more serious ones before the show gets cancelled! (I assume the past one with Simon was serious - by his standards - though.) I kind of resent the points system of bisexuality in fandom, where you need to justify why a bi character would be in a f/m relationship but Joe wanted to play at settling down and pretending everything is a-ok so Sarah makes sense. They still made a point about having the club scene and the one where he talks about getting gay bashed, and they didn't need to have either of them.

meridian_rose: Nolan Ross and Emily Thorne, Revenge (revenge default)

Revenge had Nolan Ross. Was seen to have both male and female partners in canon and pre-canon flashbacks.

Torchwood had a bisexual lead male character in Captain Jack Harkness (though it is generally implied that he doesn't just limit himself to humans either).

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And his main male love interest was also bi. Actually, I think bisexuality might've been a requirement for inclusion on the Torchwood team.

Although they made a point of saying that he didn't like any other men, just Jack which was a bit too cliche for me. (Being exactly the kind of judgemental asshole I criticise above lol.)

Lee Pace's lead character in Halt and Catch Fire is bi. (Though he's less of a lead after Season One, he still has a major role.) Da Vinci's Demons has been cancelled now and was very daft when it was on but the lead in that was bi as well. Black Sails is very much up for debate label wise and I can't get too into it without spoilers but the male lead is definitely not straight.

(Not contradicting your general point, just giving some rare counter examples.)
