What do you mean, like middle earth with modern technology?

I think the idea is somewhat interesting. Sometimes when I read/watch stuff set in some kind of medieval-ish fantasy world, I wonder what that world would be like several centuries in the future, and I kind of wish some author would do something with that idea.

The Ile-Rien series is getting there. First book is an analogue of 17th century France; it's worked up to around WWI tech and conflicts.

The only time I will read Middle Earth modern AUs is when there are still elves and dwarves and Hobbits and such, just with modern technology. I really mostly hate modern AUs in this fandom, though.

...not to self-plug, but I am quite literally working on a fic with this premise RIGHT NOW. :D

I can also do stories that are set in this world, if it's a Modern Earth translation of the storyline. I did read at least one really good fic like that, and a few moderately good ones. At least one of the ones I think of as "moderately good" were probably Sherlock reincarnation crossovers.

I love all modern AUs. Especially for GoT because it is often the only time the characters are happy.

I generally hate modern AUs but almost half of my GoT otp's m and e fic is modern AU, so I finally caved and was surprised how much I enjoy it, as long as everyone is still IC.

Related: I'd love to see a modern Hyrule, mostly because I love the idea of a LoZ game where Link is in a modern setting (but still using his medieval weapon set).

That's Elvish? Is there specific Elvish modern fashion?

I think it's hilarious that the suit/shades combo makes Thranduil look like Agent Smith. Who is Elrond.

Is this piece fan art for a fic? Because it looks like it would be interesting to read!

I'm not a big fan of AUs in general and could never quite put my finger on why, but I think it's similar to what you're saying here. The thing for me is that I find it really hard to view a character as the same character if they have had a completely different background to develop their personality. So an AU where the entire setting is 100% different is basically an original fiction piece with characters named similarly to the source material as far as I'm concerned. Adaptations of the canon universe (like steampunk Middle Earth or w/e) feel more in character to me than just, say, plopping all the Dwarves from the Hobbit into a coffee shop in Denver.

For the most part, I am not a huge fan of Modern AUs, because if one takes the characters out of the second world the canon is set in, much of the interest is lost. If it's a Modern Earth retelling of the story, or a reincarnation AU, I can read it, because those ideas hold onto more of the original story/characters, but a random coffeeshop AU or other setting basically removes everything and only leaves the character names intact.

I did once read a fic that was a LotR/Pacific Rim AU, which is about as close to what you're saying that I saw, since it was set in Middle Earth. That was good, but it petered out and got left unfinished.

I was intrigued by the crossover possibilities, so I did a quick search. Did you mean this one? Because that seems to be finished now. Anyway, I bookmarked it for later and will give it a try. *g*

The name does look familiar, and given the Aragorn/Arwen listing in pairings, it is probably the one I was thinking of. I know at one point someone linked to a picture set that took shots from old movies of Viggo and Liv's as a visual for Jaeger pilot versions of them.

Though now I also recall a great Modern AU I am fond of for Dragon Age 2 - a fic where Thedas and all the character roles (warrior, mage, Fenris' spirit warrior, dwarven crossbowman) are part of a big MMPORPG. The central story is that Garret Hawke plays a female character in-game, but has developed romantic feelings for a fellow player, Anders. Like I mentioned before, it managed to keep some of the over-all feel of Thedas by turning it into an online game the DA2 characters are players in.

I definitely wish there was more of this. (At least partially so I'd have a chance of actually encountering some next time I'm fichunting for a work set in a secondary world.)
It's such a cool concept :D

...Besides, chances are that I'm more familiar with the secondary world than with coffeeshops/(American) high school/etc anyway.
