Re: Rant thread

It's probably ridiculous, but I'm still annoyed by the whole Thomas Gibson mess on Criminal Minds. Not the fact that they fired him, even if the kicking incident was fabricated/exaggerated, he must have done something to deserve it and I'm actually a bit pissed at him for that.

But the show has no idea how to treat/communicate with fans. Now, I could understand them not being the nicest people on social media (and they're not, they can be outright rude and condescending) because right now they probably have to deal with a lot of angry TG/Hotch fans. But even the official CM info/spoilers that get released are disappointing. Most of it is about the new guy, which I'd get if the whole mess hadn't happened but is not the smartest move in this situation. The only news about existing characters and/or storylines we haven't known about since last season is that Reid's mother is coming back. But that's probably around/after Christmas. The only smart thing they've done so far is bring back Emily and get her to stay on as Hotch's replacement.

We still know nothing about how Hotch is being written out. The only articles mentioning the fact that that's something that must happen at one point are speculation, often based on interviews from before he was fired. I get that they don't want to spoil it, and that it's not going to be a nice arc like with Morgan. But just some reassurance that they're going to try to put in some effort for the character and his fans would be appreciated.

I hate that I'm getting so worked up over this. I don't want to be one of those #NoHotchNoWatch people because even though he's one of my faves the show has lost characters and moved on before. But ugh...I was so excited for this season and now the whole thing feels tainted. And I'm an adult and should not let a stupid show get to me this way.

Well. Thanks for making a rant thread. Guess I needed it.

Personally, I'm glad they apparently haven't spoiled how he's leaving (though I know I've seen some "We finally know how!" clickbait on Facebook for weeks).

I mean jesus, what's the goddamn point if you go into it knowing everything?

Yeah, they don't have to spoil exactly how he's leaving. But right now it could be anything from an entire episode (or even arc) dedicated to his disappearance/death/whatever to a throwaway line that 'oh btw, Hotch has quit, but here's Prentiss'. I get that their options are limited bc the actor isn't there, but some indication that they'll do the character justice would be nice. As it is, I'm honestly worried it'll simply be an afterthought.

I get the feeling a large part of the reason they haven't spoiled anything about Hotch's exit thus far is because it would logically invite questions about the entire incident that lead to Gibson being fired, and depending on what orders the network's given the cast/crew/writers/showrunner/etc., they may not be able to say much right now even if they wanted to.

I agree that it would be nice to at least have some general idea of where they might go with his storyline (and if they're still working out a more permanent explanation, that could factor into the lack of spoilers, too), so that people could either be reassured or prepare themselves for any tragic possibilities. But I think that's the biggest reason we're not hearing anything, that there's probably only so much they're allowed to say right now, if anything at all.

Plus, after having had to deal with that kind of negative press and talk for the past month, I think the show's probably looking forward to talking about anything that is NOT that right now, and want to keep their focus on promoting happier/more exciting things that could draw fans in and keep them watching instead.

That does make sense, them not wanting to bring it all up again. Except that it gets brought up again (by fans) anyway whenever they release anything new, partly because of the lack of information.

I like the idea of them still working on it or drawing it out into a longer arc. That means it's more likely to be something satisfying. But there was a recent behind-the-scenes pic of Prentiss's name on what used to be Hotch's door. So I don't know how likely that is.

And I totally agree with you that focusing on the characters they do have is the best thing to do, except they're not really doing that either. Except for the new guy, we haven't really gotten much info on any other kind of storylines or what's up with the other characters. And it feels like most of that came out just this last week or so.

I don't know. This is definitely a messy situation, possibly even a no-win one, but I still think it could have been handled better. But I might just be biased because I'm annoyed it happened at all.
