I find it's incredibly helpful in terms of helping me get into a character's head and figure out what makes them tick. In fic, you're in charge of the entire narrative - you only have to put the characters into situations that you want them to be in, which means there can be all sorts of aspects of characterization that never come up in a fic. With RP, it's a lot more freeform, and it can lead to exploring sides of a character you might not even have realized were there.
