Working on characterization for a fic, you only have your own input, and you're the one asking all the questions. What RP can do is cause you to think of things you wouldn't by yourself.
One thing that always happens to me in RP that winds up helping me in fic is needing to explain to my partners why a character is doing a certain thing (either in the narrative or in casual conversation) and I feel like having to explain it in a manner others can understand really helps me get down character motivations.
