You couldn't find anything on dreamwidth? I was looking into RPing on dreamwidth just a couple of months ago in my freetime, and there were a ton of options. I was active in the LJ RP circuit back in the day, and from what I've seen, the process is nearly identical. GET ON IT, OP!

yeah, all the stuff that used to be on LJ pretty much packed up and moved to DW whole cloth

the culture has changed some - it takes itself a lot more seriously than it used to, for better or worse - but the journal-based panfandom structure is pretty much intact

(unless you wanted single-fandom dressing room shenanigans. then you are pretty much shit out of luck unless you can collect some canonmates for PSLs, and that's an uphill climb)

NAYRT

Canonmates? PSL?

Can you decode this for me? I used to RP original characters WAYYYYYYYY back in the old days, primarily on an old chat server called Snap Chat, then I used AIM and MSN Messenger.

I am way, way out of my depth here even though I would love to get back into roleplaying.

Canonmates are characters from the same canon. A PSL is a private storyline (a one-on-one thing, as opposed to a many-person game).

It's not dead, all the games moved over here to DW.

[personal profile] enablemeplz should get you started looking at the games advertising as well as people looking for one on one.

Maybe you'll find something on this entry in [personal profile] gamedirectory?

I never RP'd much, but I wonder, is it really so helpful for ficcing? I always found the style and structure very different, and from what I've seen editing RP logs into a coherent fic is mostly pretty challenging. I've only encountered a handful that the end result was readable.

I find it's incredibly helpful in terms of helping me get into a character's head and figure out what makes them tick. In fic, you're in charge of the entire narrative - you only have to put the characters into situations that you want them to be in, which means there can be all sorts of aspects of characterization that never come up in a fic. With RP, it's a lot more freeform, and it can lead to exploring sides of a character you might not even have realized were there.

I think it depends on the person. I found that RPing got in the way of me writing my own fic because I was so involved in the RP. So even though I still dabble in RP sometimes, if I want to actually get my own stuff done, I stay away.

I don't think that RP writing and fic writing work the same, in terms of being able to directly translate an RP log to a proper fic.

I do think that RP gets you thinking about things that fic often wouldn't. Working on characterization for a fic, you only have your own input, and you're the one asking all the questions. What RP can do is cause you to think of things you wouldn't by yourself.

One thing that always happens to me in RP that winds up helping me in fic is needing to explain to my partners why a character is doing a certain thing (either in the narrative or in casual conversation) and I feel like having to explain it in a manner others can understand really helps me get down character motivations.

I actually know some peeps who are professional writers that got a lot of practice writing in this way, one of whom recently credited her RPing days as helping her A LOT.

Just for a streak of different, I'd suggest Twitter. I know the format there of only 140 letters can be a little agravating, but it can word, especially if you use something like TwitLonger or Twitshorter for long posts. Twitter also has the value of being able to be virtually live, if you and your RP mates are on at the same time.

Two down sides? Trying to find people who actually active if the initial interest period is over, and archiving - you basically have to do that for yourself if you want to keep a record of stuff.

I still rp on LJ, but mostly here on DW. It's just a matter of digging around, asking people in your fandom, etc. Good luck finding something you'll enjoy. :)
