How can I tell if someone is going into my house (who has a key) without permission?

Like...subtle traps and shit. Or, if anyone knows a good surveillance camera that doesn't cost a lot, that'd be cool too.

wipe the door handle and test for fingerprints

I don't know any specific cameras, but I would recommend filming it, that way you have proof if you want to confront them.

Sticky tape!

Surveillance-wise...do you have an old tablet or webcam laying about?

If you have given them a key, you have given them permission.

But, I mean, nanny cams and other surveillance are well-known, easy to acquire things. Unless you want to balance bottles on the doorknob and leave your own home through a window or stick toothpicks in the door jamb. But that seems like a lot of work that won't tell you specifics about anything.

Garbage. When you give a spare key to someone like a relative or friend, you establish conditions for its use--like maybe they're coming in to feed your cat while you're on a business trip, or they have a key so they can come in to help if you're ill or injured. That doesn't mean you're giving them carte blanche to just waltz in whenever they please.

Scotch tape or string across the door gap positioned so that it will break if someone opens the door.

Why would you trust someone with a key in the first place? That pretty much telling them "Hey, come in whenever you want!" whether or not you meant it that way.

That aside, I'd place a few Nanny Cams around the house, or some other "hidden" camera. Either that, or ask a couple neighbors to watch your place, and report any suspicious activity.

Well, most people do it as a security measure, in case you lock yourself out etc. At least, that's why I do it.

Yep, sticky tape or string/dental floss between the door and doorframe in a way that it will be moved/broken if the door is opened.

You could also try a little flour or baby powder on the floor inside the door (if you have floorboards or tiles) to see if it gets disturbed - footprints etc - when you're not there.
