I didn't read the book, but I have a question. Is the whole Grace thing, chosen ones with special skills etc., a kind of religious theme?

No. There are no religious themes in the book as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure what it is, exactly. There's no indication of it being genetic, though there's not really any indication that it's not, either. It's just that some people are born with them and that's The Way It Is. I hope that is explored and unpacked more in the sequels.
