I don't know the rules of this show. Are the contestants professionals, or amateurs? Because it's a nice cake for a hobbyist. If my friend made that for a party, I'd have lots of compliments for them.

But it's substandard for a professional baker; I wouldn't want that as ~my dream wedding cake~ in any circumstances.

Technically, they are amateurs but the standards are still much higher than that. Especially in the finals round, where professional-level work is expected.

Amateurs, but they're supposed to be the country's BEST amateur bakers so generally what will pass muster for friends and family won't necessarily work in the competition. By way of comparison, here's the cake made by the winner, who did a waterfall of all edible "flower" petals made from fruit and sculpted marzipan bees:
