Aw. I liked her. It never felt fake to me. It really did seem like she had low self esteem.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. After a while, all that apologizing and apologizing and apologizing even after being told not to feels a little tiresome, even if it's not insincere.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to anxiety, depression and shit self esteem.

We're tired of apologizing, too, but it doesn't make it any less sincere. As annoyed as you are by hearing it, imagine how we feel in the first place to have to apologize for existing.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no need to welcome me, I've got plenty of experience with all three, thanks. I've never once "apologized for existing", at least, not since I was 12 because wow, that's super melodramatic and I don't think I could do it with a straight face.

Also, the person in the secret (who was the subject of the conversation, not depressed people in general, or you in particular) wasn't apologizing for existing (lol!) she was apologizing for being a terrible baker... which she wasn't, and for which she received multiple reassurances, every single time, that she was a very talented baker. She was also gently checked by the judges not to be so hard on herself, but she still did it... which is probably why people found her repetitive apologies tedious.

Anxiety, depression and low self esteem are not free passes to do whatever you like without people getting tired of it. When people act like they are, it makes all of us who suffer from these issues look bad.

I don't know the rules of this show. Are the contestants professionals, or amateurs? Because it's a nice cake for a hobbyist. If my friend made that for a party, I'd have lots of compliments for them.

But it's substandard for a professional baker; I wouldn't want that as ~my dream wedding cake~ in any circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-30 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, they are amateurs but the standards are still much higher than that. Especially in the finals round, where professional-level work is expected.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Amateurs, but they're supposed to be the country's BEST amateur bakers so generally what will pass muster for friends and family won't necessarily work in the competition. By way of comparison, here's the cake made by the winner, who did a waterfall of all edible "flower" petals made from fruit and sculpted marzipan bees:

And the other finalist, whose cake wasn't quite as nice, but mainly because she didn't do the stamping on the second tier straight:

Lol u sound like an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't she barely prepare for the final?
I don't think she was insincere, I think she was just young and a little bit unfocused.

I think so. And it explains what went wrong because she was good at that sort of thing in many of the other rounds. She just hadn't prepared enough and psyched herself out I think.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU.

Mary even gently called her out on it at some point (I think?) and she STILL kept doing it.

I also hated how she kept saying "Oh, well, school's really busy" or whatever. Sure, that's nice, but I'm sure all the other contestants had stuff going on too: work, kids, whatever. They weren't pouting and making excuses for every second challenge.

Anxiety. I apologize all the time for stupid things, and then apologize for apologizing when people tell me to stop.

It's a stupid loop and it really bugs me when neurotypical people don't think about this stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
1) You're assuming that the ayrt is neurotypical.

2) Just because there's a mental health issue at the root of the behavior doesn't mean everyone has to excuse it. I deal with anxiety issues as well and I'm very familiar with the babbling and apologizing to people when it's not necessary. And you know what? That's on me. It's on me because at the time, I'm not handling my anxiety as well as I could, and while I hope people will be understanding, I don't blame them at all for being annoyed by my behavior. I certainly am.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I think both Mary and Paul addressed her habit of frequently blurting out "OH MY GOD I'M SO SORRY IT'S BURNT/RAW/NOT FINISHED AND IT'S TERRIBLE IT'S A DISGRACE BLAH BLAH BLAH I DIDN'T HAVE TIME AND IT'S AWFUL SO AWFUL WOE IS ME" as soon as they walked up. They did it very kindly, of course. But it was a bad habit and rather unprofessional not to let the judges get a word in edgewise (or actually TRY THE BAKE) first before you barrage them with your sob story.

Yeah, everyone's got a life they're trying to balance with bake off, with jobs, families and/or school. In series one, James was going through medical school. Martha was studying for her exams. Ruby's degree in philosophy (lol) wasn't anything more than what previous contestants had to deal with, but she complained the most.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the rumours about her and Paul were really nasty, but she still annoyed the shit out of me with her constant weeping and apologising. I don't think it was fake, but I also don't want to watch it week after week!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it was fake or not, but it certainly got tedious when she just wouldn't quit with the constant self-deprecation and apologizing for how terrible her cakes were even before anyone had tried them.
