Yeah it's mainly for social justice reasons over actual artistic merit. Steve McQueen is talented but he's overlooked because he's black but has a penis.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve McQueen is overlooked? lol I would have been with you if you named another black female director or another PoC director.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Um...

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2588606/?ref_=nv_sr_2

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... He was nominated for Best Director and 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture. He also got a lot of acclaim for that Fassbender sex addict movie, so try again.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep so he's more critically acclaimed and talented and yet he still gets overlooked whenever someone talks about someone being the ideal choice for a film about black people.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Good point. He definitely is overlooked in the crucially vital area of fancasts

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't see how she's been getting more media attention than he is lately I don't know what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, "media attention" is not the same as "reputation and critical acclaim", and neither of those things is very much like "who is ONTD's favorite director".

Second of all, if DuVernay has more media attention right now, it might be because she has a TV series out and is in pre-production on an adaptation of a well-known children's book. I mean, that's just a theory, you know.

It's still really hard to figure out a sense in which McQueen is "overlooked".

I wouldn't call Steve McQueen overlooked among people who actually care about those kinds of serious movies. Sure, he is going to be overlooked by Michael Bay fans but even most of those people have heard of 12 Years A Slave.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well just on places when ONTD and Tumblr they always jump to Ava whenever something is about a black person (i.e. the Black Panther movie). McQueen is usually not mentioned.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
An antiquated gossip site that is often wrong when it comes to predicting what's going to be hot and tumblr. Oooh.

On ONTD, Ava whatever has the bonus of being black AND female. That is like double the points for SJWs.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ava is the only black female director they most likely know. There's nothing wrong with rooting for someone other than doods, right?

Wouldn't it be better to expand your horizons and watch/root for female black directors that are less well known?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I was thinking of the woman who directed Mississippi Damned, but she's been getting a little more attention lately.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What about Amma Asante? (Who directed *Belle*.)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say McQueen's filmography doesn't make me think a superhero movie would necessarily be for him.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, get the fuck out of here. The dude has a fucking Academy Award.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So in other words they're overlooking a talented and award-winning black director in favor of someone else because she has the XX chromosome.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not overlooked. How the fuck is he overlooked. What are you talking about.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-10-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
THERE IS NO XX CHROMOSOME. THERE IS AN X CHROMOSOME. THERE IS A Y CHROMOSOME. THEY ARE SEPARATE.

I CAN'T STAND IDLY BY IN THE NAME OF BASIC SCIENCE.

TIL...

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a black Steve McQueen.

I posted a secret once about not knowing they were two different people, even though one of them has been dead for many years.
