Yeah it's mainly for social justice reasons over actual artistic merit. Steve McQueen is talented but he's overlooked because he's black but has a penis.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve McQueen is overlooked? lol I would have been with you if you named another black female director or another PoC director.

I wouldn't call Steve McQueen overlooked among people who actually care about those kinds of serious movies. Sure, he is going to be overlooked by Michael Bay fans but even most of those people have heard of 12 Years A Slave.

I think the bigger problem is that in Hollywood there can only be one [insert underrepresented group here] at any given time. But I'm not going to knock her too much since she's using her status to help other, hopefully more talented, filmmakers.

Well said, anon!

I haven't seen it, but I'm pretty sure Queen Sugar is directed by women from a lot of races.

I find it telling that you made two basic comments in your secret, one comment talking about your hate for her, and another taking about her race and gender.

You didn't volunteer any good reason why you hate her, just went straight into her race and gender. I think it's pretty obvious you have an issue with her race and gender.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't say that too loud, you'll get tarred and feathered with the SJW label. Which come to think of it, it's lost a lot of it's bite now that it's been co-opted by Trumpkins and the alt-right.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate her, I just think she's overrated and not that good of a director. The race and gender is brought up because that's the main reason why everyone is falling over her.

Have you considered the possibility that, like, perhaps other people enjoy her films more than you do? And that it's just a difference of opinion, rather than that people are lying or deluding themselves into think she's better than she is?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you suggesting that *gasp* taste is subjective, and that there is no actual ironclad standard by which people can judge if a film is good or bad?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Who is she and what has she directed?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She directed a MLK film that's known for being a smear piece on LBJ

When people were gushing over Selma, I didn't hear squat about the director. For whatever reason, they cared about the movie, not the director.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
lol then you weren't paying attention. That it was a black woman directing the movie was a huge selling point.

I didn't even know she directed it.

13th looks lit, I'm pretty excited

she's still growing as a filmmaker, but from what I've seen from her, I've liked... so I'm glad she's getting more and more chances

I think the only reason why anyone cares is because of her race and gender

well that's just your opinion...
but even so, why shouldn't her race and gender matter? she's got things she wants to say that directly correlate to her experiences as a black woman, and credit should be given where credit is due
if you're accusing people for paying attention to her because of tokenism, I honestly don't know what to say to you

you may not care for her or her work, but she's creating a precedent that hopefully opens more doors to other PoC female directors and screenwriters

Wah wah whatever. Say she's bad all you want but at least give some reasons as to why you don't like her. Otherwise you're just whining.
