Once upon a time it was triple vodkas and irn bru, but then I hot my 20s and those sort of sweet and strong drinks lost their appeal, and regular lagers and beers took over; the occasional strong ale for variety. These days it is a nice rich red wine, or if it is a real treat then it is a nice aged Single Malt Scotch, or mead. Mead is great, especially a real mead and not one of those chemically created ones made of granualted sugar and flavourings, proper mean from a properly rich and thick honey, but you have to keep it for special occasions. It is a real one glass to nurse for the entire evening kind of drink.

Moniack mead is usually a pretty good one. There are lots of small makers and varieties (lightly spiced and mead fermented with walnut are good too) and everyone is pretty different, but Moniack is a good middle of the road mead to start off with. It has a nice thickness to the liqueur, you don't want one that is as liquid as wine or a spirit, it should be ever so slightly syrupy in the glass.
