I assumed that the point of the film was that there was no correct interpretation. Just multiple valid ones. Because sometimes life is messy and confusing and you can never know for sure.

Yes, that's the point. It's even more ambiguous in the play, because it's just the four adult characters. Donald, the schoolboy, is never seen and that helps so much because you only have other peoples' word for what happened to him. In the film you can attempt to interpret his brief appearances, and speculate how much the various stories are coloring what we're reading into these scenes-- but through all that, Donald does show something of himself to the audience. And that weakens the ambiguity of the piece to me, rather than add something to it.

I think of the play as being a Rorschach blot. There's no correct answer, but the way you respond to it and the conclusions you come to reveals something about you.
