Yes, that's the point. It's even more ambiguous in the play, because it's just the four adult characters. Donald, the schoolboy, is never seen and that helps so much because you only have other peoples' word for what happened to him. In the film you can attempt to interpret his brief appearances, and speculate how much the various stories are coloring what we're reading into these scenes-- but through all that, Donald does show something of himself to the audience. And that weakens the ambiguity of the piece to me, rather than add something to it.
