I can sympathize with anti-shippers' frustration at feeling like shipping takes over a fandom, to the point where they might have a harder time finding non-ship related fic or discussion. And if a fandom is overrun by ship wars especially, for someone who's got no dog in that fight anywhere, obviously I see where that could suck the fun out of any fandom experience for them, too. Yeah, they're not personally involved in the ship war, but if they have a hard time finding a fandom space that isn't full of infighting (especially if it's a smaller fandom), that would obviously impact their enjoyment of said fandom to some degree.

But I don't get why anti-shippers act so shocked or annoyed that shipping is still a thing in and of itself. People have been shipping characters since time immemorial, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Romance is still a part of many people's lives to some degree, so it's only logical that it will play a role in many stories, too.

Certainly there should be celebration of and focus on friendships and family bonds wherever possible, and I also support more media that focuses on characters for whom romance is NOT a big part of their life (or part of their life at all). But I don't think mocking shippers and romance-oriented stories is the way to change that.

Pretty much all of this. It's understandable, but the pettiness helps no-one and in any case it's not exactly news that 98% of all fandom is shippy.

Yeah, agreed.

Pretty much this. I'm dipping my toes into a new fandom where the more popular ship just... doesn't make sense? So yeah, there's a lot of ship fighting going on in the fandom just because of that.

People that just hate shipping in general though are usually pretty miserable people.
