Same.

At least if they're fighting the ship war because they like another, competing ship, it's because they have something else they like. It's at least a little bit understandable to me.

But just hating with no love anywhere? That sounds incredibly tedious and unfulfilling.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, I have a NOTP where I love one half of the pairing solo and hate the other half regardless of who they're paired with. I kind of multiship the character I like, but really I prefer them on their own. I wouldn't waste time hating the pairing if I hated both characters involved.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I can flat out say haters that hate bc thyey like an opposing ship are way more toxic than those who just hate

Yeah, I just don't get it.

I can soooort of get hateshipping - but, just hating someone else ship? Dear lord have you nothing better to do?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
TBF, I do understand the bitterness if you're in a fandom space for gen or some other ship or whatever, and the juggernaut pairing is always in your face. I've seen fandoms where even completely unrelated posts get hijacked by juggernaut shippers who then reblog it endlessly back and forth until it might as well have been a shipper post from the start. So the hate, I get. But I definitely agree that there has to be more productive ways of venting the frustration than just crapping all over people who enjoy the thing you hate.

I mean, part of the problem there is Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
(Although sometimes I wonder if the hateshippers aren't doing it because they secretly love a competing ship, but think they will be taken more seriously if they pretend not to have a dog in the fight.)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this. More than once. They say they're not shippers to virtue signal that somehow their opinion on what is the "right" ship vs. the "wrong ship" is more neutral.

"I'm not a shipper. I don't think shipping has any place in this show. Don't get icky romance in a show that's not about ships. I hate how the show caters to shippers for A/B. It's nothing but fan service."

And then in the same post (board discussion or blog), "Ship A/C is much more realistic than ship A/B. Ship A/B is just some fairy tale to appeal to the teeny boppers. I know that ship A/C got together and go married once the show ended. Because that's way more realistic."

I just saw the latest example of this today, despite the fact that said show ended a couple of years ago with a strong canon hint (and the WoG) that ship A/B was going to happen in the future.

I don't get theses kinds of comments. Why would you think someone's life is "unflilling" just because they like to hate ship? Most people have lives outside of fandom and use it has a hobby or a form of escapism.

Where are you getting that moral superiority from? It's all just fandom bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, because what people like to ship is their business? If someone is doing something that doesn't affect your life or your fandom interests, why such an ugly response, and to such an extreme? Live and let live.

I can sympathize with anti-shippers' frustration at feeling like shipping takes over a fandom, to the point where they might have a harder time finding non-ship related fic or discussion. And if a fandom is overrun by ship wars especially, for someone who's got no dog in that fight anywhere, obviously I see where that could suck the fun out of any fandom experience for them, too. Yeah, they're not personally involved in the ship war, but if they have a hard time finding a fandom space that isn't full of infighting (especially if it's a smaller fandom), that would obviously impact their enjoyment of said fandom to some degree.

But I don't get why anti-shippers act so shocked or annoyed that shipping is still a thing in and of itself. People have been shipping characters since time immemorial, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Romance is still a part of many people's lives to some degree, so it's only logical that it will play a role in many stories, too.

Certainly there should be celebration of and focus on friendships and family bonds wherever possible, and I also support more media that focuses on characters for whom romance is NOT a big part of their life (or part of their life at all). But I don't think mocking shippers and romance-oriented stories is the way to change that.

Pretty much all of this. It's understandable, but the pettiness helps no-one and in any case it's not exactly news that 98% of all fandom is shippy.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, agreed.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. I'm dipping my toes into a new fandom where the more popular ship just... doesn't make sense? So yeah, there's a lot of ship fighting going on in the fandom just because of that.

People that just hate shipping in general though are usually pretty miserable people.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Sadly, it's not limited to shipping/anti-shipping. There are just people who love to hate, and crap all over people and don't care whose feelings get hurt.

The thing I don't get is that the antis constantly say how triggering my OTP is. Then why are they looking at stuff about it? Why are they dedicating a blog to it?

I just don't get wasting energy on something I don't like, if I dislike something I stay away from it completely.

It's one thing to be frustrated at a ship/character seemingly being around every corner in fandom, I can understand the frustration of just not jiving with a fandom fave, but the people that clearly go looking for the ship/character that bothers them just so they can complain about it truly baffle me.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it depends solely on how obnoxious the fanbase is. There's a TON of stuff I don't ship, but when the shippers are constantly getting in everyone's face about how their ship is SOOOOOO canon and how everyone who doesn't ship their ship is a racist, homophobic misogynist?

Yeah, I hate your fucking stupid ship.

But some who do nothing but post about their OTP are still constantly getting into arguments and drama and getting their friends to harass people. You're kidding yourself if you think the antis are sad but the rest of fandom has a fulfilling and positive hobby.

I can understand hating a ship. But maybe not being highly vocal about it, except w/ friends. Some things are disturbing & gross. Mostly I'd rather know less about them & stay away, tho

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I quietly hate a ship, but that's more because the shippers scream that it's canon and any day now the creators are going to reveal that the two characters have been secretly married the whole show. And so it ends up as 'fact' in meta discussions that of course these two are married and have a kid even though it's 100% a fan ship and the people in charge have said conclusively they're not currently together and only teased that they might be end game.

Also because they harass all the other shippers, especially if they ship one of the other two people because 'it's pairing bashing if you don't include their canon relationship!'

Ok...as shipper myself...you can make the same argument for those who DO ship: how unfulfilling must your life be if you can only find enjoyment in a FICTIONAL relationship?

It's both stupid and probably true on both ends of the spectrum, but that is making assumptions and I have seen fulfilling relationships from people who ship and who don't ship and sad, unfulfilling ones from both.

So...stop being so judgmental, dude.

Yeah, same. I never thought it would come the day I'd have to block someone but here I am, blocking antis on twitter/tumblr left and right.
