My only surprise is that it took people till 2016 to spot how racist his hiring practices are. Pretty sexist too. When was the last time you saw a TB film that had anything other than a straight white cis male protagonist?

People still put more emphasis on the Mad Hatter's character than her, sadly.

His character was even listed first in the ending credits roll. I still remember how odd that was. Putting Depp's name first in the advertising made sense because a big-name actor is going to draw a bigger audience, but that shouldn't change who the main character is.

Credit placement is a thing determined by contracts. Alice is 100% the main character of both those films.

Directors are rarely involved in the casting process too. He's fortunate that the studios have been willing to back him casting his personal friends in so much.
