I was interested in the film until those comments.

A decent DVD rip should be out before the year ends.

Is this the Miss Peregrine movie? I hadn't planned on seeing it, anyway. The book was kind of boring, to be honest. The choice of Tim Burton as director is a little too on the nose for me, since I feel like his recent films are along similar lines: lots of emphasis on nifty visuals, and not much of a story.

Eh. It has gotten pretty good reviews and I want to see a good fantasy film. I'll probably be seeing it in about 3 weeks when it is less busy. My sisters will like it even if I don't.

The casting choices and Burton's attitude were the least of this movie's problems. It was a mess.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Also the one black actor plays the bad guy. I am shocked by this surprising development.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like it's Tim's aesthetic to only hire people who look like his goth, pale, wide-eyed art. I'm not saying it's right he never hires black people but just saying.

Deep Roy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish.

Robert Guillame, Big Fish.

Ada and Arlene Tai, Big fish.

And there are probably more but I'm too lazy to check all his movies.

You need to realize that outside your little Tumblr world and maybe a few cry babies at university give a shit. But then again those cry babies are also the ones who feel discriminated against for being expected to use proper grammar and facts over their "invented" narrative.

Would it be better for every film (including the ones made for the black community) had to reflect our countries racial breakdown? White people still outnumber all other racial groups added together.

I'm not alone in thinking Tim burton stuff is boring right? Maybe cause I didn't see any of his things until a burton obsessed friend convinced me to watch a bunch when I was like 21. I was very bored and unimpressed andvfeel like that is carrying over to all his work.

It's all very...samey looking? Considering some are figurines and some are ppl...

Pls say I'm not alone.

Look at all these people that are disappointed that Tim Burton of all people didn't cast a movie that takes place outside of America in a place and time before the country in question was more racially diverse with people of different races. How surprising... except not.

Stop being so America-centric and stop acting like early 20th century Britain was full of different races, it wasn't.

I don't give a shit about his movies but his comments about how he used to love blacksploitation films and some movies just "don't call" for non white actors were kind of unfortunate. He's an influential filmmaker who obviously has a lot of control over what stories he tells and how they look. I don't think it's too much to ask that he consider how a wider selection of people could he involved and represented instead of talking about how tokenism offends him more than racism ffs

I'm glad people are talking about the fact that a book by a white author is being made by a white director w/ lots of white actors, and the fact that a lot of white people (me included) never really have to think about race unless we choose to. It's good to be reminded. It's good to ask for more diversity. It's good to have these discussions even when people try to shut them down.

I'm not a fan of Mr. Burton. Just not into his movies. But he's famous and well-loved by many. I for one am glad that he's still not above critique. I doubt he reads F!S or is suddenly going to include more variety in casting choices, but these are still conversations that need to exist until Hollywood is actually race blind and casts for roles instead of looks.

Instead of casting the usual white girl with blond hair (or brown hair and glasses and a sassy attitude, both v thin of course) as "the love interest" of the white guy who saves the world, maybe cast the best actor or actress for the role. Yeah, there's still room for two stereotypical bit part POC roles per movie (sassy black prostitute! angry latino gangster! inscrutable asian played by white man with tape on his eyes!!!). But that's not good enough.

Yeah, there have been improvements but the world could use more. Movies aren't just watched by White Americans and it's time to change the reflection of the world as being only about white people (and a few bone-thrown stereotypes).

srry fr rant
