Look at all these people that are disappointed that Tim Burton of all people didn't cast a movie that takes place outside of America in a place and time before the country in question was more racially diverse with people of different races. How surprising... except not.

Stop being so America-centric and stop acting like early 20th century Britain was full of different races, it wasn't.

It depends a bit on what you mean by race. Early 20th century Britain was certainly concerned with immigration and race, but they mostly meant Germans and especially German Jews at the time.

Or maybe he could stop only making movies that take place in settings where he has excuses to only cast white people? :^)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm*

I'm sure someone on tumblr actually thinks this.

Or you could just not give him your money if you disagree with his choices. I doubt you're giving him money anyway, so go spend your money on people who do things you like. Now stop being purposely obtuse.

true

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, let's think... There would have been a fair number of black people, a good few Chinese, LOTS of Indians, and probably a delicate smattering of every race from every place the British Empire covered.
But oh dear! That would be ACTUAL historical accuracy, and not just the bullshit that lazy people spout to defend racist casting. What, did you think all the black people left England when they outlawed slavery? Just like in America? Get a grip.

Okay, but it's a tiny fucking island, not a main city core. That's like being shocked when you go to small towns in the southern US and even small villages in the UK nowadays and it's still 99% white.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*Rolls eyes into the back of my goddamn head*
So if it all takes place on this tiny fucking island, how is it relevant to the discussion that it's off the coast of Wales and not Sri Lanka? And if the main characters are taken from all over the world, why cast all of them with white kids? And if you're arguing that they have to stay accurate to the book, why did they change the girl's power?
(Because, I don't know about you, but I'm a lot more likely to care if a superpowered character has the right superpower than the right amount of melanin)

Good for you, people who aren't you have different priorities.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Lol you are all over this thread just caring so much about this and being so butthurt, it's kind of funny.

Take your own advice. People who aren't you have different priorities, and they're allowed to talk about it without the usual uninspired, uneducated "BUT IT WAS WHITEY MCWHITE LAND BACK THEN" fools coming out of the woodwork to get triggered that people are talking about the lack of diversity in media.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
So first your argument is that it's not historically accurate, then you say you just don't care - say, are you familiar with the term 'moving the goalposts'?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
this exactly. I live in a medium sized town in europe and we have a vastly diverse population. my class back at school was 50% second generation or mixed from various countries.
still, drive 50km out of town with a black friend and it's "look, what's a negro doing here?" (not even meaning it as hostile. just like they're from space or something)
So in the specific context of the film (or the book, I guess), such a character would have stood out, would have needed justifying and so on. not easy to do for an adaption.

There's a pretty big gulf between "this place wasn't exclusively white" and "other races were plentiful and common and integrated into everyone else's everyday experience." And that's not even getting to the racial makeup of port towns and big cities vs obscure villages in the middle of nowhere.

I think this is the comment I most agree with in all this.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
but the world was white! historical accuracy~!!!!!!!!!!1111

(they LOVE historical accuracy, don't they? it's like an obsession...as long as it's only about "whiteness" whether it existed then or not

(Anonymous) 2016-10-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
So true. There's probably a million things in the movie that aren't historically accurate, and they don't care. But ask for some non-white characters, and then they freaking out about "historical accuracy".
