Ain't that the worst? :(

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
You were going to keep the stories if you had saved them, after the author made it clear she wanted them gone by deleting them? You suck.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
As long as they don't repost it what's the problem?

Also all fics have download options anyway. People could have downloaded them as soon as they came out

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
lmao what? any fic author who deletes the public versions of their fic AND expects other people not to keep them if they have them saved is a delusional special snowflake if there ever was one.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Viewing a file in my browser means it's stored on my phone/computer. If someone doesn't want their words stored somewhere out of their control, they need to not post it on the internet. As long as it's not being distributed, what's the problem?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. The internet is forever. If you can't deal, don't put shit out there in the first place.

"I will now delete this thing I like from my personal hard drive for the sake of this complete stranger who will literally never know either way."

lmfao

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
LOL no. An author who publishes a book doesn't get to destroy every copy ever made if they decide they don't want it out there anymore. The internet is like that, only more so.

Awww, I'm sorry OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Been there! I wish more authors would give a little warning so fans have time to download soon to be deleted works

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
But that makes the assumption the writer thinks they have fans. If I delete a work because it has all if one review in five years, I'm assuming nobody but me gives a damn and will trash it. One comment in five years tells me there was something wrong or nobody liked it, so why should I keep it up?

Did you try the Wayback Machine to see if any might have been saved there?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
AO3 is now inaccessible from the Wayback Machine. Sad day! :(

I'm so sorry, OP!

I've been in fandom long enough that I'm a little obsessed about downloading stories by authors I love since one never knows when/if that writer is someday going to pull their work.

Though why oh why they don't just orphan it on AO3, I'll never understand. :(

(For the record, I am a writer AND I have never reposted any fanfic I've downloaded that has been pulled.)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I once found out an old favourite writer I'd lost track of had written a bunch of kinky angst fic for my brand new OTP... a few days after she deleted all her accounts overnight because of hate.
I know the writers don't owe me anything, but I wonder why people don't use the "orphan work" feature more?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I would never orphan a fic because I would not want to lose control over the public presentation of a fic.

I'd be very unlikely to ever delete my account, though - not unless my rl job were at stake or something.

SA

Hey OP, I was inspired to try finding copies of the deleted fic by googling and I'm having pretty great luck so if there were other fans of this person's writing maybe you can find it.

inb4 "that's disrespectful!": not everyone who deletes off an archive cares if people share copies of their fic.

That sucks, OP. There's been dozens of fic I'd love to reread that were either intentionally deleted or simply hosted on sites that have closed down. Nowadays I automatically dl and save anything and everything I like, because I'm so paranoid about it.

You might try asking around to see if anyone has saved copies of the fics. Lots of people dl things now to read on phones/ereaders, and lots of other people are like me and archive stuff they like.

I recently had an author literally delete a work while I was in the middle of reading it on AO3, like, I hit the Next Chapter button and boom, all gone. She deleted all of the prequels, too, which I'd loved. :(

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is why every time I see an exceptional fic I try to save it. One time my all time favorite author deleted everything and disappeared off the face the earth. I was able to save some things through the power of google cache, but I don't know how efficient that is. I think I just got lucky in that case.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, this reminds me of years ago there was this really popular fic. This was back when fanfiction.net was the big thing.

Apparently their rules were super strict so this extremely popular fic got deleted because they used a few lines from song lyrics at the beginning of each chapter to set the scene. Lots of people were outraged that the author wasn't even given a warning so they could at least edit it, and even though the author said they'd upload it somewhere else they never did. They kinda faded away and never wrote anything after that... at least not under that username.

There were like 15 or so chapters and I had saved the first 7 on a whim and made the mistake of telling people on a forum to PM me if they wanted what I had saved. Years later people are still tracing my contact info to outside the forum asking me for it even though I've long since deleted it...

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who doesn't get upset if an author deletes a work I like? Sure I like to reread some of my favorites, but even if I can't having read it the once was good enough for me. I'm just glad they wrote it and posted it to share in the first place.
