but what if no thought has been put into which character comes first before the slash when pulling up tags? what if I just literally thought of character A first and can't even remember whether A bottomed or topped, and started typing their name, and that's what popped up in AO3's handy auto-fill suggestion?

how do you know the tag is specifically because of who tops? unless you're on pixiv, man, some of those artists are militant about only tagging who tops.

I assumed it meant adding tags like Top: Character, Bottom: Character, etc.

I always just tagged alphabetically because I'm anal.

...I'm going to take that pun as intended, anon.

But that makes sense. I've never tagged like that but that makes way more sense for the secret's sake.

Pun always intended with me. :3 My girlfriend just ¬.¬ faces me.

Does AO3 even let you chose which order your pairing names go in? I thought there was usually a default tag for a pairing with a set format. Or maybe it's just that the search function doesn't make a distinction.

There's only the default tag for the pairing. So if the tag comes up X/Y but your fic is really Y/X then you've got to clarify it with a separate tag.

generally on AO3 people have the X character tag, Y character tag, X/Y pairing tag, which is alphabetical, and they can also add Top!X and Bottom!Y "other info" tags which get adopted from freeform tags if they are popular enough

personally I only bother with top/bottom tags if my sex scene in that particular fic happens to go against the more common fanon arrangement

apparently it doesn't. I learned a thing!
