What movie completely exceeded your expectations?

Brother Bear - I don't like animal movies but I thought this one was really enjoyable

Tinkerbell movies - How good could a Tinkerbell movie be? Apparently really damn good.

Dredd - I had heard that it deserved to do better than it did but I was surprised how well the characters were developed, especially Anderson

Battleship - It's not a good movie but I had so much fun with it. I was surprised how much actually.

I fucking love the Tinkerbell movies. And as someone who doesn't originally LIKE Tinkerbell (mostly because her original character is a vindictive little bitch), that surprised me.

Right? I never really cared for her or the Peter Pan stuff but I adore the Disney fairy movies so much.

Captain America: Winter Soldier. I hate the first Captain America movie. I find it to be super boring and can't stand watching it. And I didn't like Captain America in Avengers that much (I now think that Joss Whedon has no idea how to direct or write any character that isn't Tony Stark).

But everyone was raving about Winter Soldier so I decided to see it like a month after it came out. I went from a "Meh, Captain America" to "Captain America fic dealer."

I found the first Captain America movie mostly endearing. I'll go back to it just for the characters. I love analyzing the characters' pasts as well as their relationships; it makes me appreciate the changes even more.

CA1 will always be one of my favorites of the MCU; I like sci-fi/occult WW2 stories and CA1 was the first MCU movie I ever actually sat down and watched. In a very real way, it's what made non-X-Men Marvel click for me. For a lot of reasons I place it above CA2 -- but only slightly, as CA2 is also completely, irresistably amazing and also the closest thing we're gonna get to a Metal Gear Solid movie.

I enjoyed Cap 1, but it wasn't my favorite. Cap 2 so exceeded my expectations and became and still remains my favorite MCU movie.

The Deaths of Ian Stone was pretty clever, turning a Lovecraftian situation on its head with insights into the real nature of the threat. I recommend going into it knowing as little as possible.

Hot Tub Time Machine. I went to see it in theaters because I had free tickets and I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed it.

Pompeii. Expected it to be stupid. Well, it sort of was but in a fun way that I loved.

John Carter. The reviews made it seem like it would be awful, but it was a genuinely good movie.

Jupiter Ascending. Reviews made it seem bad, but it was fun.

Jurassic World. Was awesome.

Edge of Tomorrow. Also awesome.

Oooh, I hated "Pompeii". I'm going to complain about the dreaded 'historical accuracy', and also Keifer Sutherland as a Roman. I don't know exactly WHY he can't be a Roman, other than he seemed like an anachronism personified.

However, agree with all the others on your list, with a special shout out to "John Carter" (which should have been named "John Carter of Mars", if not "A Princess of Mars"), which was a genuinely fun, enjoyable popcorn movie. It got so much bad press, and I'm not quite sure why (aside from its bloated production budget).

Yes, not going to claim it was remotely historically accurate. My enjoyment comes down to liking the characters, thinking it is pretty, and liking most things volcano-themed. Not going to claim it is a good movie. I just enjoyed it.

I was expecting Jupiter Ascending to be "Meh". I still don't think it's a great epic, and that the worldbuilding has room for so much more than the plot of the movie, but it was the best choice of inflight movie I had (and the other option was The Hobbit, though I now forget which exactly, but I am inclined to think it was BoFA), and it was good enough in my estimation to buy the DVD, and if I buy the DVD, it's because I like it.

"Spy." I saw it because I had nothing better to do, and figured it might at least be funny, if not particularly good. Instead it was good, and actually pretty feminist.

The Force Awakens. That speaks more to my expectations than it does to the movie, which was adequate as a movie. Just with Captain Lens Flare at the helm, a guy that does not understand how big space is or how slow the speed of light really is when compared to space, and of course the prequels, and aged Harrison Ford, a Junkie Princess Leia, and yet another Death Star, my expectations were basically more about how badly it would suck.

Junkie? Is that a commentary on Fisher's past or just her weight? Because either way I think she looked good for her age.

Planet of the Vampires. I went in expecting mid-60s trash. What I got was a surprisingly good movie that while still steeped in 60s sci-fi trappings turned a lot of it on its head, using great set design (including some fantastic miniature landscapes) and a creepy, unusual soundtrack to create a genuinely creepy atmosphere which carried the movie when the acting didn't.

Also, awesome costume design -- it's like Jack Kirby designed Star Trek.

I had no idea what to expect from CTHD and I only went to it because people I knew wanted to see it. I was very impressed and glad I went.

I had low expectations for Toy Story 2 because it was a sequel and sequels often aren't that great. Pixar had no sequel track record at that time (or even a very long track record in general) so there was no reason to assume it would be as good as it turned out to be.

I was very excited about the LOTR trilogy and did have high hopes, but it all could have gone disastrously wrong and I was so glad it didn't. It was mainly the art direction, costumes, and things that really surpassed my expectations.

Fury Road's TV marketing made it look very much not my thing (not bad, just not something I'd enjoy) but I went on a friend's recommendation... and then went back to see it 5 more times because it was so good.

I had always meant to see Ghostbusters, but I made a point to go early in its release because a friend said it was really funny. It always seems that people exaggerate how hilarious everything is, so I wasn't expecting to be literally crying with laughter, which I ended up doing.

17 Again. I expected to kind of hate it, but I fucking loved that movie and it made me a fan of Zac Efron

Home. All the previews made it look like Alien Olaf The Movie, but I loved it.

I'd never heard of it when I watched it, but I love it!
