Halloween costumes!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you like dressing up? No? What are your favorite costumes? What's the best costume you've ever seen?

Re: Halloween costumes!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't dress up anymore (not since I was a kid), it's not my thing, but I like seeing how creative other people's costumes are.

The best one I saw was a couple of years ago, two little boys, about 4 & 5 or so, dressed as Walt and Jesse from Breaking Bad, in the yellow hazmat suits.

All my favorites are apparently culturally appropriative and sexist, so fuck Halloween.

Maybe next time don't go as "Blackface Harriet Tubman With Her Tits Out".

Actually I've seen something similar, college frat party filled with edgelords. Yep, it was as bad.

I'm not a big fan of dressing up, I've always liked simple costumes, like chef or construction worker, super easy and comfortable.

Best were at the same party I went to in college. One was Pirate Jesus, where he wore an eye patch to make himself Pirate Jesus and the other was Pimp Santa. His dad had the Santa costume, he had one of those giant plastic yard candy canes as his pimp stick, he found a pimp hate that was red with a piece of holly in it and then he bought one of those evergreen car air fresheners shaped like a tree and sprayed painted it gold. I wish I had a picture of him!

I no longer enjoy Halloween. All the costumes I liked are racist now instead of escapist like they were when I was a kid.

Hi, same anon from earlier in the thread.

Re: Halloween costumes!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon, similar but slightly different sentiment. I'm more regretful and wistful about an earlier -more innocent- time than prev anon who is an angry little puppy. You can ask Case if you want, he tracks all these things now. Every single little thing you post he logs, but don't worry, it is safe in his yahoo account.

AYRT--huh. I dunno, I can't think of a single racist costume I'd be disappointed to not be able to wear. What do you regret not being able to do?

I like the aesthetic of kimono, but I'm also into doing stuff right and there's so fucking many layers I'd sweat to death tbh. Some Indian bellydancer type costumes are awesome (and if you actually bellydance I'm not sure they count as appropriative if you avoid bindi and darkening your skin) and I always thought bad ripoff war bonnets looked like, well, dyed chicken feathers which is probably what they're made of. Weird suede "Indian Princess" bullshit with fake turquoise jewelry and ultrasuede minidresses is just embarrassing for the wearer, tbh. And I'm kind of out of ideas for other stuff outside of those awful "look, he's got a straw hat and a poncho he must be Mexican" travesties.

Oh, and I'd be actually horrified if I saw anyone in those fake tattoo bodysuits Disney's selling as Moana merch, because there was a thriving trade in actual Maori heads by Westerners for awhile because the art was so awesome, but, you know, trading severed heads.

I would also like to know what costumes you can no longer wear that you wish you still could, just out of curiosity.

Also, are you PROTECT YOUR DATA AT ALL COSTS anon?

I fucking love dressing up. I want to do all of Christine's costumes from Phantom of the Opera at some point, so far I've done her slavegirl and Elissa dresses from Hannibal and her dressing gown. The most comfortable costume to wear that I've made is probably my OUAT Belle blue dress; it's all linen so it's light even through there's 9 yards of fabric in the skirt, and it's machine washable, which is a plus. The cloak that goes with it is super heavy because it's made of upholstery fabric, so I don't bother with it much.

I've seen a lot of awesome cosplay costumes, but one of the coolest things I've ever seen anyone do for Halloween didn't require any sewing; my boss made an awesome Queen of Hearts costume out of red and white duck tape and playing cards.

I love dressing up! Especially when going to bars. I'm going to be dressing up as girl Han Solo and my girlfriend is going as Leia.

That's awesome. I need to look into some bars on the bus line here that will let you dress up for Halloween.

Okay I don't do Halloween but last year I was at a bar on Halloween and there was a zombie pub crawl and it was hilarious! The zombies stayed in character and everything, but they wanted BEEEEEEERS instead of BRAAAAAAAAINS.

Yes! I love dressing up. Right now, I have three costumes: Bellatrix , Obi-Wan, and Arwen. The second two are in storage in Boston, though, so Bellatrix it is for this year. When I was a kid, I went as Luke Skywalker just about every year. I just really wanted to be a Jedi.

While I have yet to actually dress up as Luke Skywalker, I totally understand the sentiment of wanting to be a Jedi. :)

Not for Halloween specifically, but I love dressing up, though most of them are cosplays. I basically love all of them. My steampunk dress is probably on the more comfortable side (no chest binding), but the Lucifer (Angel Sanctuary) is probably my favorite for feeling badass.
I also own a yukata I bought in Japan, which I've worn at several Japan-related events and such, and it's really beautiful. I also own a hanbok, which I received from some Korean friends for my birthday, which is also gorgeous.

I love dressing up--though I err toward the cosplay side of things, and it's usually a character from a game, a cartoon, or a book. Whether I end up handing out candy or taking my nephew out I'm planning on being Chica, as in the killer chicken animatronic. Feasible unlike, sadly, the Big Buff Cheeto Puff herself, Jasper.

The best costume I saw was a wereshrew, done by my favorite biology professor in college. Like literally, he managed to go werewolf-style, but with a shrew (which was his focus in a lot of his academic works).

Yes, and I'll probably be Vriska again because I'm working on revamping it, and I'm the sort of person to perfect one costume rather than make many (also because of time and money constraints)

I will wear it to the costume tournament we're having at one of the card shops the weekend before and also to hand out candy to kids

Not sure if I will put on makeup for either/both of those things, though the rest of the costume is easy to don and wear. the makeup just takes some more time and is messy.

you know what's shitty about being an actual cosplay commissioner? Halloween.

I eat, sleep, and breathe cosplay so when Halloween comes around the last thing I want to be is a media character that I cosplay regularly. But now that I have a house, we host parties and decorate with a theme, so I get to roll out to the thrift shop and cobble together a cheap, shitty costume to go with the theme and then never wear it again. It's oddly freeing.

I've been Pokemon Trainer Leaf to my local con three times. I'm rather fond of that costume even though it isn't the best thing I've made. This year I'm thinking of going as a human (with kitty ears) version of Sassy Fran from Neko Atsume.

I appreciate hilarious ones that aren't offensive, are creative, and not overdone. I also really love ones that are genuinely scary.

I like sexy ones that aren't tacky, as well! lol
