Aliens is my favorite movie, full stop.

But it's not pure horror, it's action horror. Alien, on the other hand, is good suspense horror.

For straight up, heart-pounding, watch-between-my-fingers, horror, it's Halloween (1978)
An American Werewolf in London is an awesome horror comedy.
Jaws - good at jump scares, amazing score (by turns menacing, majestic, suspenseful, and playful), well-done tension building.
Poltergeist (1982) - some of the creepiest things ever (the television, the bathroom mirror, that freaking clown doll, that tree, the pool).
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - man, just the concept is horrifying, but damn do some of the images stick with you (and make it very difficult to fall asleep).

I also quite like Monster Squad, Fright Night (1985), Tremors, Silver Bullet, Gremlins, Scream, and Zombieland. I do honestly like some of the sequels, but beyond Aliens, I usually consider the original the best.
