Idk in my experience the sweets and cakes are pretty universally liked. It's the savory food that seems to cause problems.

Well... I don't know about universally liked. I really don't care for steamed/boiled puddings at all. And they seem very fond of dense fruitcake type cakes, which I also don't enjoy.

They use dense fruit cakes for WEDDING CAKES. Dense fruit cakes are what you're supposed to give people you don't like for Christmas.

da

Well, Americans do weird things with food too. Also fruitcake is delicious.

I don't know any British "sweets or cakes" that are inherently British, that are universally liked or lauded.

I find lots of scones pretty heavy and tasteless - which tends to describe British food in general, imo. As far as cakes and such, what's inherently British that isn't better elsewhere? Serious question, because I never found it when I lived in the UK.

Did I mention that it was better then everywhere else? Or did anyone?

Well bread on a whole is usually fairly bland in over-all flavour, and scones are a type of quickbread.

Storebought bread is rather bland. Homemade bread absolutely shouldn't be, and if it is, someone's doing it wrong.

Yeah, and good batch of home-made scones are a treasure to eat too, especially pumpkin scones. I think I have only ever made pumpkin scones once though.

Store-bought scones? Well cafe scones can be good, but I wouldn't trust supermarket ones. Maybe this is the effect of a mother who is good enough at scones she supplied the school cake stall.

you're getting scones at the wrong places if that's your only experience of them.
