You're not missing out on fandom friends. You're keeping a safe distance from people who will jump down your throat the second you have an opinion they don't agree with. Trust me, it wouldn't make your fandom experience any better to befriend them.

Like other people sharing their kin even though said kin happens to be a pretty popular character.

They don't even have to jump down your throat. A few days ago I saw one getting all snooty and "I guess you just don't want someone to appreciate how your art made them feel" to an artist strongly agreeing with a post about not tagging artwork "kin".

Because, y'know, it's not like said artist had other fans capable of doing that without being kin with the character depicted 9_9
