Inspired by #5

Mine is: Birds using their wings/feathers like hands/fingers.

/sigh
I'm dumb and tired. #4 not #5.

Bad things happening to cats as comedy. It didn't bother me until I had one, though.

This in general. Then again I've always had cats so I'm sensitive about it anyway?

But I also don't like bad things happening to dogs either? Just...bad things happening to animals as comedy in general unless it's animation and it's to the villain animal.

Agreed. Nothing is less funny or acceptable to me than "kill the cat" punchlines. Just, fuck you.

The cats being aloof assholes trope.

Sharks constantly depicted as having the ability to terrorize entire boatloads of people.

Oh, so many, many more... but those are the two major ones.

I think that people forget that even cats and dogs have individual personalities, just like people. Not all cats are the same. Sure, I've known a lot of aloof cats, but that doesn't make them assholes. That is just their personality. And plenty of cats are also super affectionate.

Re: Animals in media pet-peeves

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed so much on the cats thing. I've had and befriended many cats, and never known one to be "aloof". I think people who assume cats are aloof, don't actually know cats or have no idea how to "read" them. You can't "read" them the same way as a person or a dog, the signs of personality, affection, and interest are just different.

Yes, shouldn't they use their beaks and feet for that?

Absolutely! Feathers don't work that way.

Crows/ravens being depicted with yellow beaks. Or when they portrayed as stupid. That's just so untrue!

Seconding the "cats are assholes" trope, though it mostly bothers me when it's one of the usual cats Vs dogs stories where the cats are always the bad guys and the dogs are the good guys.

Agreed, and i say this as someone who loves both but dogs slightly more. They are just different. Just because a cat is not a dog does not make it a bad animal. But if you try to treat it like a dog, you are not going to get the response you want.

do they still do those weird TV ads with the birds that look like crows but have white feathers on their chests that make them look like they're wearing undershirts with no arms?

Horses = Dogs. I was horse-crazy as a wee kid and always felt personally insulted when fictional horses were dogs and it's lasted all my life. It's why I loathe Tangled. Horses as people has always been fine but for some reason having them act as an animal, just a different animal, always pissed me off.

Lizard boobs. And boobs on non-mammals in general.

Male bees and ants that should actually be female. (Looking at you, A Bug's Life, Antz, Bee Movie, Ant-Man... pretty much every movie featuring ants or bees.)

Animals that are not dogs or cats behaving like dogs or cats.

Parrots being depicted as "living recording devices" or "polly wanna cracker?"

I've had parrots. Most of them are "repeat annoying noise and if it gets attention repeat it more", "mock the humans", or both. Especially our old Amazon. He would mimic the damn smoke detector just because grandma set it off so much while frying things and then he started mocking her when she'd tell him to shut up.

Pretty much anything with sharks [apart from Finding Nemo]. No, sharks aren't relentless killing machines. No, they don't kill for sport - you're thinking of dolphins. No, those waters aren't 'shark-infested' - the term you're thinking of 'inhabited by sharks', because it's their goddamn home you utter numpty.

-Anything portraying cats as evil, unfriendly, human-hating, etc.
-Portraying rats as ugly and devious
-Using real wild animals as "actors" in movies - unless it's a really non-invasive way, no, that tiger is not a circus prop, it should not be handled and made to portray tricks
-Any glamorizing of exotic pet ownership (unless it's non-invasive to the animal, like say, a fish kept in a good-size aquarium, and isn't an extremely unethical exotic pet industry, which most of them are)
-The lack of ferrets in the media (fuck you California for making ferrets illegal, of all the animals that should be qualified as exotic, domestic ferrets are not one of them)
-Monkeys/apes dressed as humans. It's super uncanny to me. (ugh chimps in overalls and the like) Then again, monkeys/apes are often kind of uncanny to me in general, and not cute, probably because they do look (relatively) so much like humans except wrong.

Horror movies being made about misunderstood animals (Jaws, Lake Placid, Anaconda...) Yeah, these animals are feared enough, and these movies do NOT help things.

Birds having teeth. Ew, it's creepy.

Wrong sounds in wrong places (There's no Kookaburras in Africa, Eagles don't screech like Hawks, and so forth)

Cartoons revolving around predators not eating. Does PETA make those?
